I thought it was because of synchronisation of the grids in each country being different.

Could this 3m.30' video about an App, be the answer to creating employment, saving the planet and... to resolving the Brexit fiasco? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/storie...out-of-rubbish

The answer can be found @ 3 minutes into the video.

Nooo. The undersea cables run at very high voltage (270 kV), with the earth being neutral. At these voltages the electrical capacitance of the cable would result in significant losses if AC power was used. In fact it is calculated that by the end of the cable the losses would actually be greater than the power you could put in!

AC power would also require better insulation than for DC power as dielectric strength of the insulator is reduced under AC conditions, although DC switchgear is a lot more complicated

Synchronisation of the different grids could be a potential problem as load occurs at different times across the continent but it doesn't seem to cause problems within Europe itself. In any case our grid frequency varies slightly throughout the day according to load but always averages 50 Hz from midnight to midnight. Interestingly, this is how 'smart chargers' know when to charge electric cars and so forth.

Now if we had an AC connection to the USA that really would cause a problem.

You are right, of course, I worded that badly, in a failed attempt at a reference to the EU being out of sync with the UK...

However, in a moment of reflection I recalled that the HVDC link now runs through the Channel Tunnel.

Yes, very high voltage DC means lower current so losses are much less.

I don't think we have ever been in synch with Europe have we?

The French interconnector does run through the channel tunnel, but the Dutch and Irish interconnectors are subsea cables.

Yes indeed, but the capacitance of a 73 KM long cable would be like a short circuit at 50 Hz!

Actually, reading into it further four of the eight subsea cables were damaged in 2016 by a ship dragging her anchor, so at least part of the interconnector runs across the sea bed.

Yeah - just come back from 5 days camping in The Roaches (Staffs). Weather was horrible - roaring wind and lashing rain!

Ignore that it is in the Guardian, it matters not which way you voted, there are some hard reality issues that simply cannot be ignored.
