Beating The Retreat

It was the Queen's official birthday last saturday and the flags were out down The Mall.

The Mall

Now the Queen's birthday is marked by "Trooping The Colour" when the standards of the different regiments are paraded around so that the soldiers know which flag to group around in the heat of battle. So it was no surprise that the stands were out at Horse Guards Parade.

Horse Guards Parade

In the days preceeding this ceremony they utilize the parade ground (with all the seating) for "Beating The Retreat" for which you can buy a ticket. This ceremony marks the ordered witdrawal from the battlefield back to camp as night draws in - you can tell its not modern warfare here.

As befits the meaning of the ceremony it is a late evening show. The E-PM2 and 14-42EZ is not the ideal tool for job (E-M5 and PRO zooms spring to mind) but it was what I had with me. I didn't have my VF-4 with me or the lowly 40-150 so I had to hold the camera at arms length and use it as a point and shoot and hope for the best, making sure that the focus box was somewhere in the right vicinity (the downfall of needing reading glasses). Now this combination can do sharp (perhaps a later post) but in pitch black with dodgy floodlighting I managed a few that were acceptable if you don't pixel peep and ignore the auto ISO going to 2500 and the lowish shutter speed.

As close as you can get without a ticket.

A fantastic range of photos. If you hadn’t have said, I wouldn’t have noticed. “British” looking views.

Ah, you need a lot of history to put on an obscure ceremony. Thanks Phil.

An interesting set Om. I can almost hear the band playing the Pomp & Circumstance March!
