Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

A Lone Springtail

This is a species in the family Hypogastruridae, probably a Ceratophysella. These tend to appear in fairly dense populations, such that a single individual, with no others seen in the vicinity, is unusual. Anyway, I thought it made a worthwhile image. Both images have been cropped moderately, then more so. the springtail is about 1-2mm long.

Olympus EM-1 (manual mode), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, f14, triple flash hand-held.

Harold

Moth alert:

Yesterday I saw the first early instar larvae of the Cinnabar Moth on ragwort and I have just seen the first Scarlet Tiger Moth of the year.

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

June Visitor: Sawfly Tenthredo notha

These turn up each year. The green/yellow and black colour makes them instantly recognisable.

I mostly see them (lone ones only) on the foliage of Goldenrod. The wasp usually lands on a leaf at, or close to, the tips of stems but soon moves to lower ones. A good view is generally difficult to obtain and the choice of angle very limited. Getting flash illumination through the foliage, without it becoming green, is a nightmare so I rely on daylight. I got several shots, only this one sharp. It is 1:1 (FOV 17.5mm wide) and uncropped.

The wasp appears to be feeding on some (insect?) detritus.

Olympus EM-1(aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, 1/250 at f11, hand-held.

Harold
