New Retailer Challenges Tesco!

Probably more chance of finding what I want on the shelves......

Quaint Nice to see they still exist. Where I grew up in a little village both local independent newsagents are now Martin McColls

A good picture, but the idea of rural peace is slightly spoiled by the bars on the windows! Even round here, just a few miles from Prestonpans, we don't have those (they'd probably be stolen ...)

Re: New Retailer Challenges Tesco!

I think it's a bit confusing too because the 'real' Debden is down near Loughton (as Andy M, a resident of Loughton, will no doubt confirm). This shop is in Debden Green, near Thaxted, 30 miles away from Debden. I think I shall have to call in the authorities over this matter as they are clearly not trading truthfully.

...or London Irish rugby club (now playing at Reading and not very Irish any more), or London Welsh (going to play in Oxford next season). Makes London Wasps, who play in High Wycombe which is only a few miles outside the M25, sound like positive homeboys.

Ciao ... Rugby John

Re: New Retailer Challenges Tesco!

Good spot, Ian! Locally the village is invariably referred to as just Debden.

Ian
Maybe they have more in common with Tesco than I thought!

I think there is every possibliity that the shop might be closed when the authorities turn up to shut it down.

A nice image of an increasingly rare sight.

Sorry Ian but as a long time resident of "real Essex" (as opposed to "metropolitan" Essex) I have to disagree.

There was an ancient 40 acre "Manor of Debden" but that, by 1254 was absorbed by the "Manor of Loughton" and the name disappeared.
In 1944 644acres of land adjacent to Chigwell Lane Station Loughton was bought by the London County Council to build a housing estate and the name was revived to call it "The Debden Estate". In 1949 Chigwell Lane Station was renamed Debden.

Conversely the "real" Debden where John took his photo has always been called Debden and even has a Mayor. Debden Green is a small hamlet between Debden and Thaxted.

Interestingly (or not) due to the last re-organisation of Local Government, Debden is now in Uttlesford District, but there is no such place as Uttlesford. When Saffron Walden and Dunmow Rural Districts were combined the name of the ancient "Manor of Uttlesford" was revived for the new authority.

English place names are confusing enough but when the authorities start messing about with them it just gets worse.

Maybe the Wasps should play at Vicarage Road - they would then not only be inside the M25 but would also share a ground with the Hornets. Saracens fans may not be too happy with that idea!
