Exclamation RNLAF Open days 2016 at Leeuwarden AFB (WARNING: PHOTO HEAVY!!!)

Last Saturday (11-06-2016) I went to the Royal Netherlands Air Force open days. This year these days where at the Leeuwarden Airforce base (EHLW).

The RNLAF had a premiere this year. They were the first European airforce which brought its F-35 Lightning II to Europe to familiarize the population with the sound of this beautiful aircraft and to do some testing.
On Saturday the lighting was challenging due to the light rain and overcast conditions. Later during the day luckely the weather improved and even the sun came out.
The first photos are of the F-35 Lightning II that had it premiere debute at the European theater. Rest of the photos are some highlights of the airshow at Leeuwarden AFB.

Hope you all enjoyed. Rest of the photos are in my gallery here

Re: RNLAF Open days 2016 at Leeuwarden AFB (WARNING: PHOTO HEAVY!!!)

I sure had a great day Ed. I had to miss the display of the Turkish Stars with their NF-5 fighter planes though, due to the security measures ( bag searches at the pendelbus stop at Leeuwarden train station). The Turkish Stars flew this year with a new paint scheme, but at least i got the F-35's flying. They where the most important to me. Now it takes till 2019 before these planes will be in Netherlands again, when they get delivered to the RNLAF. SO yes I had a good day. Although the light conditions where very challenging due to the overcast.

Good set of images.
Nice to see prop blur on the fixed wing flying machines, and one or two on the rotary images as well. Rotary A/C just don't look right with a static wing (or wings), but it's difficult to photograph otherwise. Glad to see you pulled it off, the rotary blur makes the shot.

Re: RNLAF Open days 2016 at Leeuwarden AFB (WARNING: PHOTO HEAVY!!!)

Thank you for your comment, Steve.
I know that prop and rotary blur is difficult to catch for most people, but actually it ain't that difficult at all. Just set your shutter to 1/160 or even as low as you dare and when shutter priority is set camera will set the right aperture. You can even set Manual priority and set the shutter to 1/160 or lower and set aperture to at least f6.3, f7.1, or f8 to get a nice propblur.
I do this all the time when I know a prop plane or helicopter is coming. I photograph airplanes now for 28 yrs, so it's what i do. aviation photography is my main hobby. lol.
