Visit to Papuma & Bromo 2019

Em1ii with Laowa 7.5

Am back from a 6 days adventure to Papuma & Bromo.

I had with me 2 EM1ii of which one was updated to v3 while the other was left at the v2.x. Lenses on this trip, Laowa 7.5, 12-40, 35-100 and 100-300.

The first stop was Papuma. That night, the camera with the v3 decided to shutdown It started with a No Card in Slot 1 error, so I reformatted the sim and still the No Card error appeared.

Did a few single shots and that error disappeared. So all set up for the milky way, tripod in place, cable attached and set to custom shutter release..10 frames at 20s. First press and that camera just shutdown. Did a couple more and it was the same. AND I left the 2nd body in the room

How could a brand new V3 updated camera just went boink

Tried with swapping the SD 1 to 2 and 2 to 1, still the same. the camera just shutdown after the 1st exposure. Formatted the SD (lost some images thought was better than not having anything) Still same.

Last resort, factory reset. and it worked What happened? I did some shots as shown

Not the best and not enough time. The group was leaving

And a failed startrail

I didn't even have time to use that P30 to do some test

From the nice warm beach it was time to head up to Mount Bromo...we were just in time to reach a spot to watch the sunset..

When I climbed up the little ridge I was

..what happened to the beautiful clouds?? (ref to Last year) Seems the clouds are also seasonal.

Re: Visit to Papuma & Bromo 2019

We checked in to the same resort or whatever you call it. and we were out to dinner and milky way.

This time decided to take my trusty old EM1ii without that update. You wouldn't believe my luck (or lack of)

It was shivering to the bone, with a mild wind at 6 deg C, setting up was already difficult as my hands could not really keep steady, the cold was going thru my jeans, AND when I was ready to do my 10 shots,
THAT trusted camera FROZE and shutdown WHY ME

Checked everything. All connections were correct, Custom setting for shutter release was on Silent co changed to Anti shake. and still same. 1 photo and the camera just shutdown

Not willing to do a full reset as with the New EM1ii (with V3), I did a basic reset and tried. same, shutdown after the shutter release. Checked the memory card, 83 shots to go, So can't be SD full that would only give a card full error but it just shutdown!

Did single shots, it works, custom again and still shutdown. Was going to packup when I noticed, 99998

That was the file number. Then I remember, Even back in the days of the E series, OLY does not reset or start with a new folder with 00001. IT JUST HUNG Wasted 30 minutes, -dwn ....THAT WAS THE CAUSE. Reset that file number to 00001, start a new folder

Why Olympus, it's an age old complain, can't Oly reset the file number start a new folder

Re: Visit to Papuma & Bromo 2019

Henry, the first run through of this set struck me as what a beautiful environment you live in.
That must have been a rude shock when your updated M1.2 shut down, but good that you were able to work around it and get the great shots that you did.
If you would care to share them I would be interested to know what your settings were for the Milky way shot.

The first Milkyway was done in Papuma. It's rather noisy. EM1.2 v3, Laowa 7.5/2, ISO 1600 and Speed at 25sec {400 divided by (7.5X2)focal length}. It's the same settings I did last year except that the lens was the 7-14 at F2.8. It's a set of 10 photos sacked with Sequator.

I have also another stack not really processed yet. ISO 3200 but I reduced the speed to 15s. Looks cleaner but I did not frame the foreground the sea was cut out.

Don't know what's wrong with flickr, the images are darker then what I have original on my screen.

I was hoping that I could retry the 2nd night but faith would have it that it was cloudy and the following day we set off to Bromo.

The first night in Bromo, that is the 2nd Milkyway photo in this set.

Done with the my trusty EM1ii but with the old firmware v2.x ( think it was 2.6)

The settings this time I started with the 12-40, ISO6400, F2.8 and 30s. the camera hit that (As mentioned, what happens when olympus camera hits 9999 exposures )

Panicked, changed to that Laowa after the error correction and shot the posted. I forgot to change the speed back, so it was ISO 6400, F2 & 30s. It's a stack of only 4 images and done with Affinity Photo. Seems it's slightly cleaner.

Re: Visit to Papuma & Bromo 2019

Thanks Henry, will take note of those numbers as I would like to try a milky way shot with the 8mm F1.8 Pro, but not anytime soon as the nights are too icy! Hopefully August will see fairer weather.

Re: Visit to Papuma & Bromo 2019

The next morning, we went up Seruni point at 3am to catch the sunrise. It was a popular viewing spot and was it crowded. The guide said there is another better viewing spot that was off the beaten path..I proceeded to climb..Big mistake. The ledge I was standing on was barely enough to put my foot! what more of my tripod. I dare not even risk taking out my camera. Went back down to the masses and set up my tripod, sat on a ledge.

Notice that little ledge?

Well I was going to swing a panorama and this lass decided to stand there in my line of sight

Want to do another and She moved to my right

Gave up. just too many ppl so I sat there and and enjoy the view and for ppl to clear.
