A somewhat unwelcome visitor

In November we were astonished to discover this sparrowhawk in our tree eating a bird he had caught. He was only about 4 metres from me when I took this shot from a bedroom window, and he was completely unfazed. All our garden birds disappeared and haven't yet returned....

We would prefer to have the garden birds! But this was a fantastic chance to see a young male sparrowhawk up close.

Re: A somewhat unwelcome visitor

They always cause mixed emotions when they visit but I think it is thrilling to have such an accomplished wild hunter visiting the garden. I have never managed to catch ours 'in the act' but have seen the evidence of their visits many times. A fine shot Keith.

Nice! We frequently get a fly-through of a female but it hasn't been seen to kill I'm my garden for a couple of years. Saw one take a Long-tailed Tit the other day on our lane, accompanied by a cacophony of warning calls from the other dozen or so in the flock, never heard that before.
