Water Rail

I spent quite a productive hour in the Fen hide at Strumpshaw last week. In addition to the Heron and Kingfisher with their fish which I have already posted, I was amazed when this Water Rail appeared right next to the hide. I think it is a juvenile but I stand to be corrected. I often hear these notoriously shy birds squealing in the reeds like pigs but rarely see them as close as this. After a few minutes it seemed to realise that it wasn't meant to be in the open and scurried back into the reeds, calling loudly.

They are not the best of shots but I was shooting it through the reeds, against the light, so I wasn't expecting to get anything at all. A real treat to see on a sunny day.

E-M1 and 75-300 II.

Re: Water Rail

Well done. These birds are difficult to capture on camera.

Re: Water Rail

Great shots of an illusive bird Ron.

I think I've only managed to see one once at Titchwell some years ago.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Water Rail

Well done, Ron. Difficult shots through those reeds. The last one is particularly good.

Re: Water Rail

You did well to get these shots - just sometimes those taken against the light turn out well against all the odds and these have!

We have visited Strumpshaw a few times en route to or from some friends of ours in Norfolk but our time there has been brief and not very successful.

Regards,
Ann1e

Re: Water Rail

Many thanks for the comments. I had forgotten about this post. I have just returned from 8 hours at Strumpshaw today. No sign of the Water Rail but an adult and juvenile have been reported several times recently, so I think the Water Rail in my photos is indeed a young one.
