[If you can I would suggest listening to Ralph Gibson explaining why he 'shoots' in B&W.]

But honestly, and more importantly, how many of us go out shooting with 'a point of departure', or like me walk around waiting for the picture to present itself?

I still donít really understand the supposed advice from Dorothea Lange to Gibson regarding having a point of departure. Well I know what it means but she also said that if she knew in advance what she was going to shoot that she would find that very limiting. I think the point is that we probably ought to just follow our instincts and just do what feels right, register the advice of others but preserve our individuality. I prefer randomness and the unexpected, but itís not that black and white.

Point of departure translates to having a purpose in photography. If you go out hoping to find something that grabs your eye, you're more likely to end the day with mediocre images suitable only for the garbage bin. On the other hand if you leave the house with a specific objective, eg equal balance to light and darkness in the mode of Ralph Gibson, you're more likely to have a positive outcome.
Now here's the tricky bit, that being to find your own voice photographically, and not to copy others.

I think I made my point rather poorly. There is a great deal of overly prescriptive direction given by experts who propound a methodology that suits them without considering other options. Different people, different approaches. No one way has the monopoly of of being the ‘best’. Alex Webb for example prefers randomness but no could describe his work as mediocre. It’s not unusual to find contradictory direction from different photographers but it’s unusual to find that contradiction coming from the same person, in this case Lange.

I think this supports my suggestion that we read, we listen and learn but we surely need to filter and come to our own conclusions. Otherwise we are in danger of becoming mini-versions of other people.

Gibson talks about having an epiphany, being able to identify his PoD for the construct of the dream reality so apparent in much of his work, eg the Somnambulist. I've tried copying his style but the UK suffers greatly with grey overcast skies. Whilst I wait to clarify my own PoD, I still go out shooting anything that catches my eye, but the keeper rate is abysmally low. I need an epiphany, but I'm informed it can be addictive.
