Messing around with the E-520

Just picked up an E-520 in super condition along with the 14-42 and 40-150 kit lenses plus FL36 flash for the princely sum of 100 - what a bargain. It's for my partner Elena's teenage nephew who wants to learn about photography and take it as GCSE option.

So obviously I had to check it when it arrived.....

Lovely little camera (I've never used one before) and as ever, great Olympus colours. A few examples on my walks to and from work on Friday, all with the 14-42:

This post isn't here as click bait, but there are a few more examples on my blog too - i really enjoyed taking this little camera out for a spin and hope that with its new owner, it gets out a little more often!

Cheers,

Jon

I was gonna say, but refrained until now, it does put into perspective the new very high MP sensors. But of course progress is essential.....

You see the thing is, when the other camera I am mostly using at the moment is the E-1 (unless the photos are being used for a specific purpose which requires more modern equipment), the E520 kind of is progress

Re: Messing around with the E-520

I think this superb set proves that there is plenty of life left in older digital cameras, provided they have a good operator (this is also true of the very latest, up to the minute models).

The 10mp sensor in the E-520 is capable of producing high quality 16 x 12 inch prints when used in good light and to be honest, how many of us often need to print larger? Of course, the later 16mp and 20mp cameras will allow even bigger prints, or enable the image to be croped and offer better low light performance and greater dynamic range, but that does not detract from the excellent performance of cameras like the E-520 when used within their limitations.

Thank you and I agree about print size too. I've got 16" prints from my 5MP E-1 which regularly attract favourable comments at home... Marvellous what you can do with software nowadays, and Genuine Fractals is a reason why On1 can be worth considering - it's built into their software and does a superb job of interpolating/resizing. That said, I think working with less resolution makes me try harder to preserve what I've got and frame the picture carefully in the first place....I rarely crop my E-1 images and barely cropped those from the E-520 too.

Cheers,

Jon

Lovely shots Jon. The E520 makes a great combination with the Lumix 14-150 too. My daughter used to use them together quite a lot.

The nephew's absolutely not getting the 14-150! The E-520 is heading his way this weekend though, along with 14-42 and 40-150 so they'll keep him busy.
