E3 repair hinge cover

After a look through this forum, I cannot find any mention of repairs to an E3 for a missing hinge cover.

I have contacted Luton Cameras, who say they can supply the part but the camera needs to be dismantled to fit it - cost will be around 80. They also say that there may be a screw out of the cover floating around inside the camera body !! (so far, no rattles heard).

The picture shows how things are at the moment. It looks like there may be a screw still in the body, with the cover located by two pegs - both broken off.

So, anyone tried / done this repair ? Or do I 'bite the bullet' and get it done in the New Year when I have some money again ?

David

Oh dear, that's an expensive repair for a small part. Worth it to keep an E-3 in service, of course, but that's not the point! Hope you get it sorted okay.

Re: E3 repair hinge cover

I decided to 'cut my losses', so to speak. I went back to 'fleabay' and bought another E3 instead !

Well, I got a bit more than just the E3 for my money ...

I got the E3 with 'old' 14-45mm & 40-150mm lenses, plus a Sigma 55-200mm lens plus a 500mm mirror lens plus a battery grip plus a FL36 flash plus two batteries plus a 4Gb card and a Loewprow bag to put it all in.

Cost ? £240 collected. That is about £150 more than quoted repair costs.

Anyone want an E3 needing a hinge repair ? Going fairly cheap, but will be missing the battery door bit because the kit I bought is missing the door where the grip fits.

Check the cover is not in the battery grip, it clips on the side?

Re: E3 repair hinge cover

Is it just cosmetic or does it affect the weather sealing. A spot of silicon sealant will seal it up if necessary.

No, not in the grip, first place I checked.

It is a bit more than cosmetic - if it is missing the battery falls out if you knock the camera (little clip not much good).

Checked with Luton Cameras - can get a replacement for about £14 posted.

A bit of plastic card and a roll of duct tape will provide hundreds of battery doors.

Yes, I like that. It is a solution, that is for sure.

A bit like the old engineering maxim - If it doesn't move and it should, grab the WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't, bring on the duct tape ...
