IT had to happen... eventually

ASCII stupid question, get a stupid ANSI! - If proof is needed...

Actual excerpt from a windows program help file
! -
”If the Start Windows Restart when Windows starts check box is checked Windows Restart will start automatically every time Windows is started.”

Intel: We put the ‘um…’ in Pentium.

The world’s most commonly used warning label. ”Intel Inside”

There are two ways to write error-free programs... only the third one works.

There were computers in Biblical times. Eve had an Apple.

Disc space, the final frontier!

In a world without fences and walls, who needs Gates and Windows?

Linux is like a wigwam. No Gates, no Windows, Apache inside.

I found a way to make my Windows computer go faster... I threw it out the window.

But as IT professionals know the snake was called RUBY. Its exact species is unknown but there is clear evidence it was related to both a PYTHON and a COBRA.

Sorry

Best file compression program around: "DEL *.*" = 100% compression

Re: IT had to happen... eventually

To get serious for a while, my pc win 7 has started to do a disk check every time I switch on. I have not changed anything or installed any software. It runs through this check and then continues as normal, seems a windows based program does not seem to cause harm is just a pain to have to wait for it to finish if you hit any key when it appears it stops and goes away, miss this and it takes about 5 mins. I have run virus and malware checks nothing shows. Can anyone help?

Windows will usually run a disk check and recover (CHKDSK/F from the command prompt) if it detects an error on the disk, such as a bad segment or corrupted start up file.

However, there is another possibility. Windows can only run CHKDSK/F after a reboot. It will not work whilst Windows is running.

I'm not sure where the script to run this command is written (possibly in the autoexec.bat file), but it could be that the script isn't being deleted after successful execution.

[serious mode on] You probably do have a corrupt entry for Error Checking in the registry. A System Restore point would probably fix that.

If you want to look at the entry doing it, it's at: 'autocheck' entry (value) at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\BootExecute

If you make a restore point, and delete this value, you will probably fix it. [/serious mode off]

Meanwhile, back in the 'unreal world'... the reason for your problem is that you opted for the wrong OS for you computer.

To explain...

Macs are for those who don't want to know why their computer works...

Linux is for those who want to know why their computer works...

DOS is for those who want to know why their computer doesn't work...

Windows is for those who don't want to know why their computer doesn't work.

Good point about the system restore. I would try a system restore first (from a recent restore point) before playing with the registry.

I personally take a 'disk image' from all of my machines when the OS and everything is installed and working properly, copying the data to a separate or external drive. That way I can quickly and easily restore to a working state even if a hard drive fails - which they still do from time to time!

With regard to OS's, I find that Windows 7 and 8 are fine. Windows 8 is probably the best Windows OS to date, and is certainly much leaner and fitter than earlier versions. Even my son, who was on the verge of becoming an Apple Acolyte, reckons it is the best OS he has ever used.

The Apple OS is good, but not to good that it can be installed on a PC, which is what most people want to use. I also find Apple products very restrictive in what you can do with them. I would quite like an Apple monitor, but why oh why do they make them without VGA, HDMI or Display Port interfaces?

Oh, and who actually writes the Apple OS? Microsoft I believe!
