Backside illumination (BSI)

An article in metro today on backside illumination (BSI) [I kid you not].

"BSI technology turbo-charges the chip’s pixel performance making it much easier to take quality pictures in poorly illuminated conditions. The chips are faster and move data much quicker, a feature useful for digital video recordings.

It also improves the ‘fill factor’ – the percentage of each pixel used to gather light – to reach up to 100 per cent.

These factors add up to a huge potential increase in digital camera quality."
