Flickr Sold To SmugMug

Sorry if already posted elsewhere but posting in case (couldn't find anything when searching).

Text from email

SmugMug has a long history of empowering people who love photography and who want to improve their craft, making them a perfect fit for Flickr and our creative community. With SmugMug, we’ll continue to focus on you, the Flickr members who inspire us all with your work.

Nothing will change immediately with regard to your Flickr account. You will still access Flickr with your current login credentials and you will have the same Flickr experience as you do now. We will continue to work to make your Flickr experience even better.

We think you are going to love Flickr under SmugMug ownership, but you can choose to not have your Flickr account and data transferred to SmugMug until May 25, 2018. If you want to keep your Flickr account and data from being transferred, you must go to your Flickr account to download the photos and videos you want to keep, then delete your account from your Account Settings by May 25, 2018.

If you do not delete your account by May 25, 2018, your Flickr account and data will transfer to SmugMug and will be governed by SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy.

Read more detailed FAQs about this transition on the Flickr Blog.

Re: Flickr Sold To SmugMug

Smugmug is a subscription service, starting at 3.99 US$ per month. I suspect Flickr will go the same way. However, I use my account for storage and hosting and as such I would not wish to subscribe. I would find an alternative even if it meant the dark region of my hard drive.

Re: Flickr Sold To SmugMug

I had 16 spam emails (all the same) about this from them. I just deleted the lot as I don't have any desire to use flickr etc.

Re: Flickr Sold To SmugMug

I suppose if we have to pay a small reasonable fee for the use of the cloud, then we have to bite the bullet.

I like Flickr, as it is a window of my photos for myself and anyone who wants to see them. Also, there is a community of like minded people out there who I would want to keep in touch with. Don't know them personally but nice to know...Do actually know several of them personally....

Hopefully Smugmug will work in a similar way. It is the way of the world to keep changing, just hope its for the better...

Re: Flickr Sold To SmugMug

Doubt I'd pay for it for the occasional way I use it at the moment. There would have to be some greater benefits to justify monthly outgoings.

Re: Flickr Sold To SmugMug

Having read a number of articles on this, I think it's actually very good news - for both Flickr users and the photography community in general. This is a good summary from someone with some insight.

https://petapixel.com/2018/04/21/tho...r-acquisition/

I'm a Flickr Pro subscriber (so about 40/yr if I remember correctly) which is pretty much in line with Smugmug so I don't see any cost change. OTOH, the culture at Smugmug looks much better than what Flickr eventually became (Verizon, Yahoo etc). I suspect we'll see Flickr getting some worthwhile improvement.

Re: Flickr Sold To SmugMug

To add balance to the conversation, if we don't pay for the product we end up being the product. Facebook and Cabridge Analytica spring to mind.

The thing is Dave, the free internet model really is (a) not free (you are the product - an object to be advertised to and have your personal data stolen); and (b) becoming rarer (cloud subscription is the new norm). Tech costs money and the companies involved need to generate an income somehow.

We're all prepared to pay thousands in gear but baulk at pennies for things like this.

I kinda rely on Flickr to keep my best photso ready for reference. Otherwise I would have to wade through many many directories on pooter to find what I want.

It is so handy to be able to call up Flickr on the phone for instance to show someone a photo, (mainly for ID confirmation in my case!).

As Paul says I think it would be 40 well spent (11p/day)...............

Re: Flickr Sold To SmugMug

Thanks for the heads up. When Photobucket changed from a free service, there was a lot of hype that it was going to cost 399 USD per year. Their subscription tiers panned out and I pay them 99 USD p.a and that allows me to embed the photos for forum use etc. I use PB for fun type photography, making gifs and stuff I could not post up here. I also pay Flickr for the pro service. I will see how this pans out. I am happy to pay for both, as long as it is not extortionate and the privacy controls remain. For screen quality of image viewing and exif viewing, Flickr seems to have the edge over PB.
