Thumbs up for the 75-300

I really rate this lens. I got it for use mainly at airshows and used it for the very first time at the RIAT at Fairford on Friday. Compared to the old Sigma 50-500 `Bigma` I used to drag around with my old Pentax gear, the lens is featherweight. I am more than pleased with the results with the E-M1 Mark 2. I do not consider myself to be anything like an expert compared to many others on these threads but this lens appeared to be a factor in me getting less bad shots compared to my DSLR days.

Nicely done. Much better than I ever managed with my 75-300 when I had it. Really should have replaced it I think.

Re: Thumbs up for the 75-300

I tend not to use mine much but it is much more manageable than the 40-150Pro plus MC14. I am still in two minds about its performance but I need to use it a bit more in good light. Thinking about taking it when we go to Malta in two weeks instead of the above combo.
Your images look fine. Even if the lens has a bit of softness towards the long end, this is fixable in P/P anyway.

Re: Thumbs up for the 75-300

Dave,

I am clearly a lot less experienced than you but I can say that compared to my old Sigma 50-500 the Oly is a joy to carry around and if I was travelling I would take it. Yes, conditions were reasonable at Fairford on Friday so I have yet to really test it in the murk. I did go on Saturday but it was a social occasion with my partner so only took my EPL6. Conditions were grim! I took hardly any shots but the one here with the reversed F5`s is half decent I think. The Mirage shot is from Friday.

One of the reasons I am considering in for Malta is that there won't be any murk! The 40-75mm gap between the lens and my 12-40 will have to be filled with the 60mm f2.8 which also doesn't get much use.

Re: Thumbs up for the 75-300

It is a useful lens & worthwhile when weight & size is important. Those photos show how well it can perform. I still have mine but only really using it to compare at home. Last year I took the 50-200 SWD lens to an event, along with the 12-60 SWD lens & that was good, but there are times the bag has to be smaller & that's when the 12-50 & 75-300 fits the bill.

Re: Thumbs up for the 75-300

Yeah, I am seriously considering this lens now.

I have a Pen EP5 with pancake zoom and will probably put my kit 40-150 in my smaller camera bag with that, whilst using this with the 12-40mm on my Em1 mk1.

I shoot mainly landscapes but find the 40-150 slightly soft, ceratianly over 100mm. I have considered the panasonic 15-100mm but really and extra farction of IQ is not as valuable to me as that extra reach - even though I'll try to use it below 250mm. I'm not overly bothered by the high F numbers either as I can keep the shutter speeds up around 1/500. In fact with the IS, I'd probably get away with less.

people here seem to rate it and I think it'll be a nice step up from the 40-150mm kit lens.
