Bokeh

It was overcast and raining today, perfect light to test the 40-150 F2.8 pro’s bokeh on flowers, so off to the park I went.
In particular I wanted to test the performance of the new lens without the X1.4 converter.
The samples illustrate bokeh when distance from camera to subject is about the same as it is from subject to background.

A Mode, f/2.8, 1/800sec, ISO800, 110mm (35mm film camera equiv. 220mm), Handheld at 1 metre.

A Mode, f/2.8, 1/1250sec, ISO800, 150mm (35mm film camera equiv. 300mm), Handheld at 5 metres.

Re: Bokeh

There you are Mark I did say it was only occasionally nervous. That's a lovely shot and is pretty much the reason why I kept mine. Actually when it can do that it makes the bad shots seem even more annoying somehow. But it just means that as photographers we need to practice our craft more and work with the gear to get the best out of it. I think you've certainly cracked how to use it. nice one .

Actually what happened to the second image?

Re: Bokeh

Hi Phill, Thanks, bokeh sure looks way better at f/2.8 without the converter as you would expect.

Sorry about the broken link, WIN10 can take full credit for that, it often fails to copy properly, I have to fight this bloody O/S all the way at many levels.
In my book it's a failed product. Hows about you and me an' some of da boys start a class action against Microsoft, eh, mate?

Second image now displayed.

Re: Bokeh

Stay with WIN7 as long as you can Phill, and hope that by the time you have to update your system that Microsoft has come to its senses with a credible O/S.
I am already considering a switch to Mac with a laptop. My present system is a 24" All-in-One machine, beautiful HD screen to work on.

Re: Bokeh

Mac was always a more stable system. Might be tough to get your head around after 20 yrs of Windows.
I'm now in bed on my phone, Phill. Almost 9pm, time for Iggle Piggles sleepy bye!

Re: Bokeh

Two lovely shots. Would the bokeh have been worse with the teleconverter ?

I think youíll be fine. I switched ages ago while still supporting Windows in a corporate environment and to be honest MacOS is easier once you find the differences. Go for it, you wonít regret it, despite the cost overhead. Although if you consider like for like high end specíd kit there isnít much in it cost wise.
The inbuilt apps, although supposedly equivalent to things like Word and Excel, is where the difficulty can arise as someone used to Word is going to find Pages a bit of a struggle but mainstream editing apps and the like are no problem.

Windows 10 is getting better all the time though and itís quite usable now.

Dependant on how you buy Word - e.g. I have an Office 365 account, so all the Microsoft applications are available for your Mac and work just as well (or better) at no additional cost...

I have an ex-colleague who went to work for Microsoft in the Staes and was surprised to find the Office development team all used Macs as they were better! resulting in the Mac version of office being much better than the Windows version for a while, they're much the same now though!

Maximum aperture using the converter is F4. It would not have been as good, OM ...
