Autumn colours - North

While we have settled on a date and venue for the 'South' I urgently need to finalise a meeting place for the 'North' - the colours are starting to show!

Suggestions please!

Ian

They are starting to go already, especially after the recent winds.

That's worrying!

North of London where I am the horse chestnuts have turned brown but most other trees are still green.

Re: Autumn colours - North

Last year we had quite a long autumn, but with the heat and very dry weather this year this year we are expecting another short one.

A lot of leaves have already fallen although it depends very much on location.

Location location location - that's certainly key!

Hope Valley in Derbyshire has been suggested to me?

Re: Autumn colours - North

True it's not far north Nigel but it's still a bit North for me . I'm going to Padley Gorge which is just a couple of miles south of Hope with the Belper camera Club on Saturday morning, I'll report back on what the colours are like but I'd expect it to be well developed by now.

Even Wiki describes it as being in the "north midlands". It's 80 miles south of here anyway!

Re: Autumn colours - North

Not an alternative but a suggestion in support. How about heading for Chatsworth house initially then having a mooch around the estate in the morning. Lunch at Chatsworth or the nearby Edensor Tea Cottage (looks OK on Google but not tried it myself) and then on to somewhere in Hope valley about 8-10 miles north of Chatsworth in the afternoon. The house is fairly expensive to view but anyone who wanted to could do that at some point whilst others were shooting the views.

I've just come back from The Roaches in Staffs. It's an interesting and spectacular area and the nearby Lud's Church is amazing with a magical legend associated:

The reason why horse chestnut leaves turn brown early these years is because they are infested with the larva of a leaf burrowing moth. It's very widespread.
