The 'Age' challenge over at FTU

Our sibling site, Four Thirds User, does look like a building site at the moment but the new forum and gallery there are actually almost fully functional!

The disruption has meant a fewer number of entries to the fortnightly 'salon' photo challenge there so I have suggested we give the deadline an additional week and I'd see if FTU members over here would like to consider entering their photos.

The topic is Age - which is a great one in my opinion.

You can also try out the new gallery, which will eventually be coming here.

You can find the salon page here:

Come on everyone - you must have some super shots in your photo libraries that would fit the topic!

I've now decided to offer a small prize as an incentive to the winner - a recently published photography book.

Go on - have a go at:

Re: The 'Age' challenge over at FTU

Ian, here on e-group it's permissible to post using BB codes for photo competions, why the difference on FTU?

I used a hyperlink to my E-System Gallery for mine, it seems to have worked!

Re: The 'Age' challenge over at FTU

We only made the concession recently as the gallery here is a bit of a pain to use. But there is a new gallery to try out at FTU - certainly easier to use.

Ian - talking personally, I still find the upgraded gallery on FTU pretty primitive and not easy to use. I don't think it's a great idea to force competitions to use it and it would certainly discourage me from entering comps if this rule was enforced.

What is the primary reason for you to want to push us this way? Is it to stop image linking out-of-site? If so, a potential option is what Amin Sabet has done over on mu43 - he has arranged for the images posted as links to be pulled into his site and then the post modified to include a reference to the on-site image and not the original linked image. No idea how hard that would be to implement in the forum software used here, but I think it's a good solution from the user's point of view.

It's simply historical - it's always been done that way on FTU. That's not to say that it won't change. But as people on FTU are used to doing it that way, there is bound to be some confusion.

I am a bit nervous about migrating images as there could be copyright issues, but I will look at it.

The new gallery is better than the old one and it's actively supported. I could not find an alternative that integrated with the forum. It could be better and I have already made some suggestions to Dragonbyte and may well look at getting some customisations made.

Why should a system that has been acceptable to the majority of members suddenly be changed to suit the wishes of one or two new members ?

New members are already complaining that the max allowed image size in FTU is too small. As we have seen in the E-System forum huge images are becoming the norm and totally ruins the pleasure that would be obtained by viewing them.

In my opinion, photos, paintings, works of art are intended to be viewed and appreciated as an entirety without scrolling, turning pages or having to go into the next room to see the other half of an oil painting.

As regards photo challenges or competitions, these are voluntary, if you don't like the existing rules, don't try and change them, simply don't enter !

John
Well, John - IMHO things need to evolve. It makes no sense for any organisation (a forum or otherwise) to simply keep doing what it's always done and look only to long-standing members for ideas and approval. New blood brings new ideas and helps to move the zeitgeist of any organisation forward with wider society.

In the case of the forum gallery, this is how I see it:

- The gallery software is old and clunky. It's hard to use and has limitations that are too strict compared to what our cameras are capable of. Limiting the size of images is an example. I agree that posting over large images in posts is not helpful, but there are lots of times when larger images are necessary (e.g. to show resolution or sharpness on lens reviews).

- There are lots of very good image hosting platforms in the general market which offer lots of advantages compared to a the site's gallery - such as holding multiple resolutions of the same image, auto upload from LR, indexing, search, community (likes, favourites, follow etc). I'd much prefer to put my images there and simply link to them.

- Making the forum open to as wide an audience as possible is good for us all (Ian, Olympus, the wider u43 market, the members) and I think that unnecessarily making features such as competitions limited to proprietary features doesn't help.

Anyhow - just my 2c!
