Rumor site shows patent for a Olympus 500mm F4 lens

The rumor sites are showing a patent for an Olympus 500mm F4 lens for micro fourthirds. If true this will give extra scope for people using Olympus/Panasonic camera systems.

And someone will complain it is "too big" and "against the spirit of micro 4/3rds"

Hang on Olympus, I have not yet saved up for the forthcoming 300 f4!
Of course patents often don't come to fruition but it does sound tempting (until the likely cost is revealed!)

John
I think it is too big and against the spirit of micro 4/3rds. I imagine the price ticket will be quite substantial too.

I have an OM 500mm lens, that, adapted to m43 is almost impossible to keep steady.

I've already got one if I put a 1.4x behind the OM 350mm.

Ah but you could take the 500mm f4 and stick a 1.4 converter behind that! That makes a 700mm f5.6 which is a 1400mm f5.6 equivalent!

Or stick a 2x behind the 350mm.

Re: Rumor site shows patent for a Olympus 500mm F4 lens

I must admit I know nothing about the 350. What f stop is it? The 2x converters all degrade the image quite a bit as well as losing two stops of light. How well would it do with C-AF? Of course a 500 f4 is hypothetical and apart from expense I will not get one unless Olympus improve their C-AF without which wildlife and BIF in particular are too challenging even though the lens itself sounds ideal.

I'm waiting until I'm really stone cold, off-drink-for-a-month sober to try the OM 350 f/2.8 + OM 1.4-A + MF-1 + EC-20 to get a 1000mm f/8 combo - might never happen

Cheers,

JohnGG

It's MF and f/2.8. In my film shooting days I had shots published with a 1.4x and 2x stacked behind it.

Re: Rumor site shows patent for a Olympus 500mm F4 lens

I know I could never afford it if Olympus actually makes it, but here is what I posted on http://e-group.uk.net/forum/newreply...reply&p=350037
