According to CameraLabs it's the same sensor as in the original EM5, but it'd be worth Ian confirming this.

I think it is Ed. Only the EM1 supports this. Oly wants us all to buy m43rds lenses rather than continuing to use our (superior????) 43rds glass. The Mk2 is just an update of the original EM5.

It's possible my mate Gordon Laing at Cameralabs might have been able to ask this question already as I did miss a recent pre-launch briefing but I don't know if any VIPs from Japan who would really know the answer were present and anyway Olympus can be very cagey about such details. Seeing as there is an improved sensor (in the E-M1) I would have thought the 3 year old Sony one would have been retired by now.

Re: Olympus unveils OM-D E-M5 Mark II

All the info about the Mk 2 and the 14-150 and the new 8mm fisheye has been on the 43rds R*****s site for quite a while. I find it a good read and usually pretty accurate as it has been this time.

Question, with the electronic shutter does that allow for flash sync at any shutter speed?

You can imagine this makes my life much more difficult than it deserves to be. But at least I know the information I am getting and often have to sit on is official and correct.

The Mk2 is basically a new camera although in the same spirit as the original E-M5. Practically only the battery remains the same.

With no combined AV / USB (I assume the 12 pin skt had to change for tethering) can live view be streamed via HDMI

Thanks Ian.

Who says there is no combined AV/USB port? I'm pretty sure it's the same one we have known and loved since the E-500?

I know that you are not keen on the site in question but I enjoy logging into it, as do many others around here. It is good to find out what Olympus has up its collective sleeve even though the info can never be taken as correct!

Anyway, welcome back Ian - it's been a while. Will you be at the Photography Show again on the Oly stand?

It's how I read the specification on the Olympus website:

http://www.olympus.co.uk/site/en/c/c...fications.html

"Interface

Tethered control

Yes

Microphone jack

-

Combined A/V & USB output

-

"

However it's still launch day and who's to say the Spec sheet is right...

Graham you have me very confused

But I am now wondering if you are assuming that if the camera control is via USB then the live view feed needs to come off the HDMI port but in fact both are handled by the USB port - it's all data and there is no composite A/V signal involved. You need to use Capture mode in the camera and currently this is only supported in the E-M1 and the E-M5 Mark II using the Olympus Capture software. You can also link up to Lightroom and Capture One.

Now I know I was right, when I thought I'd wait until you got back from Prague, to ask questions...

As always, much appreciated and really sorry to have caused confusion.

With all the improvements for the E-M5II, PDAF is about the only thing that differentiates the E-M1, which after all is still the flagship of the range. To put PDAF in the E-M5II would have virtually made the E-M1 redundant.

Olympus obviously intend to continue 3 clear lines in the OMD range and users who value PDAF will, quite rightly, have to wait their turn for the E-M1 to be ugraded or replaced. In the meantime the E-M1 remains very much available and is the natural choice for photographers wishing to use 4/3 lenses on Micro Four Thirds.
