Olympus' latest patent

If you haven't already seen it, a Japanese site has highlighted a patent application by Olympus which centres around modified sensor microlenses of different heights that could help enable the efficiency of contrast detect autofocus.

I am detecting some signals that this may be linked to the promised solution for Four Thirds lens users. Anyway, the article via Google Translate can be found here:

Re: Olympus' latest patent

I realised a long while ago that taking out a patent was not the same thing as bringing a product to market but can we infer from your mention that there is a real prospect that this one will actually materialise?

Re: Olympus' latest patent

The patent is from last year, so you never know - there might be something in it.

The sensor is the same for both MFT and FT of course. One theory is that the patent will help FT lens use and the other is that it's for improving C-AF on MFT.

Re: Olympus' latest patent

Might also tie in with now having a new sensor source.

Re: Olympus' latest patent

I have seen this one & after translating the google translation , it does sound promising & could be an interesting method to improve on what we already have.

Thanks Ian. BTW, the last part of Yoshi's translation is doubled up.
