My first visit to Bempton Cliffs

Decided to head off on a long round trip to Bempton yesterday as it was forecast to stay nice on the East coast. I've been wanting to go for a while to give the 40-150 +1.4tc a workout and help decide if I actually need a longer lens. Here's a few shots from the many I took. Definitely wish I'd been able to get closer especially for the BiFs as they are pretty heavily cropped and rare fairly in-focus shots.

First a couple of Puffins, the main reason I went really.

A Gannet in flight

And a Common Gull maybe???

And another in a natural spotlight on the cliff

Finally a show off Razorbill?

There were a lot of characters on that cliff face, most were birds

Re: My first visit to Bempton Cliffs

You did well Phill and have come back with some very nice shots. I have never been there but it looks like a great spot for sea birds. I think your Common Gulls might be Kittiwakes but I am not sure. Perhaps somebody with better knowledge than me can identify them for you.

Ron

Nice - especially the Puffins.

I think that you're correct Ron. The black wing tips and 'prettier' general appearance suggests it.

Re: My first visit to Bempton Cliffs

Yes, having been on the cliffs with Tesni Ward last week I'd say they were kittiwakes, too. I certainly couldn't have hazarded a guess before then, that's for sure...

Gulls and their relatives are really hard, in my humble and inexpert opinion!

I reckon kittiwakes are the easiest to recognise, especially if they're calling their name!

Re: My first visit to Bempton Cliffs

Great photos Phill. Puffins and razor bills especially. Agree with kittiwake ID.

The lens works well. Did you think you needed extra "pull" of the 300/400mm?

Re: My first visit to Bempton Cliffs

Thanks everyone, it's a great place to go for birds. Quite a challenge though at 210mm and yes Mark (MJ) I would have liked the extra pull of a longer lens. I think the Panny 100-400 would be the best choice overall even though the Oly 300mm beats it for ultimate resolution. Dr Mark, I bet a Tesni Ward workshop there was awesome, might consider that next time if she's going again. Oh and you are right gull identification is really difficult, even though one of the guys there showed me a set of pictures before I went in.

It's a good place to visit for the day, and since you're travelling from Cheshire, try and find the time to drop into North Cave on the way home. only just off the motorway.
Or call in on the way for a breakfast butty at the Wild Bird Cafe.

Phill, I would be chuffed had I taken these. Looks like a fabulous location for birding so hope you'll be able to share more as summer progresses.

Re: My first visit to Bempton Cliffs

Thanks Mark yes it is a great location. Best to go in the week out of holiday season though I'd say from how busy it was when I was there. I did take a lot of shots so just might have to post a few more later .
