Re: E-30 hands-on coming up!

Luckily - for now at least, - they are literally 15 mins away by car.

Alas, they are moving to Southend next spring!

Good news is that I have the use of it for a week and I will bring it with me to the meet up in Staffs this Sunday - see:

As expected the viewfinder view is inbetween the E-3 and E-5x0/4x0 in apparent size.

Been playing with the digital level - it wasn't calibrated properly, but the calibration procedure is very simple.

Lens firmware is 1.0, but the body is only at 0.8.

Re: E-30 hands-on coming up!

stop responding here and get on with the playing...........

probably the 2 most agressive questions/debates raging worldwide (apart from important ones obviously) are

1. is the LV implementation really still using the mirror cycle of the previous models (I can't see that it won't but inevitably there are people who would argue for what they think they want......)

2. can each focus point be adjusted individually and then the whole group be saved for a given lens (x20) or is is a single adjustment for each lens (at both extremes of FL for zooms) that made and saved?

OH yes - mymodes ...... how many and how are they accessed? Have they been added to the left hand dial (sensible) or remain hidden and inaccesable.....

look forward to a couple of definitives - then it will be back to your subjectives I guess!

Subjectively it seems to suit you (from the imae posted!)

Hi Ian

Would you say the viewfinder is about the same size as the E1??

Very little to choose - maybe very very slightly in favour of the E-1, but it's very marginal.

Worth noting that the E-30 sees about 98% 0f the frame, while the E-1 sees 100%. Other Es generally show 95%.

Re: E-30 hands-on coming up!

Hi Ian.

The thing I am most eager to know about the new Oly is:

How is the high ISO-performance?

and

How is the dynamic range?

I have the E510 and in that what I miss is especially better high ISO with less noise and better dynamic range, therefore it is very interesting to hear how the E30 with a new sensor is doing in that respect.

I have seen som high ISO images from Panasonic G1, which are not quite as impressive as I hoped for and I guess it is the same sensor in the E30?

I have been asked not to be too detailed in any feedback a give concerning the E-30 pre-production sample's performance, but I what I will say is that noise performance is looking good - better than the current generation of E-System bodies.

Dynamic range - it's hard to tell without a thorough and detailed test. I'd prefer to wait until I get a production sample.

It's worth noting that the current generation of E-System models have dynamic range capabilities not that far off the competition at ISO 100. But there is a greater fall off in dynamic range further up the ISO range. So try to keep to ISO 100 and expose for the highlights and you should be fine.
