Blue-banded Bee between showers.

For whatever reason I went outside to check on something (my mind wanders, can't remember what now) & I saw a few of these Australian native bees on (one of) the lavender bush, the Blue-banded Bee. This was as the title says, between rain showers.

So I took several photos & here's just one of the (cropped) photos.

Re: Blue-banded Bee between showers.

Thats a very sharp close up, Ross. Were you able to get a macro showing a detail the blue bands? I've never heard of that species, is it a native or introduced?

Thanks Mark, but these native bees are more active than the introduced 'honey bee' & there wasn't much chance of getting closer or any time to do much at all, but these were taken with the 40-150+MC14 lens (on E-M1 Mk II) & cropped from this image (reduced here, of course).

There is a guy (in Queensland?) that gets great images of them as they sleep, particularly morning shots as they attach themselves to the stem of plants with their mandibles.

Re: Blue-banded Bee between showers.

Here is another image showing more of the 'blue' bands, but the blue is very pale though.

Again it's another crop from this whole image.

Re: Blue-banded Bee between showers.

Magnificent macros, Ross. You are posting some very cool M1 Mkii images ... I am now wishing I had gone the extra mile. Thanks for the additional images and info.

Re: Blue-banded Bee between showers.

Thanks Alf & Mark. It is fascinating seeing these different bees & even more special, in our own garden.

Re: Blue-banded Bee between showers.

This is where the M1 has it over the M5.
For cropping, those extra megapixels are probably worth an additional 50mm onto the 150mm pro, wouldn't they?
