Re: Picture of the day

Gosh! Its one of mine.
I'm delighted someone else likes what I take.
I always reckoned on being principly a landscape photographer but in recent years I have really got into flowers. (they don't move as fast as animals and birds) I wished I knew their names more.
This one was taken last Sunday 10th at Inverewe garden. I did take the 35mm macro but most I took, including this one, I used the 12-60 hand held.
I do need to seriously think about taking a notebook to record the plant names as there were labels on each plant.

There is one photo somewhere on this forum which stopped me in my tracks.
There are lots of crackers in the galleries but this had the 'WOW I wished I had been there' look.
It is of a winter sunset over ice on the Solway looking to Criffel and I can't remember who its by. You can feel the cold. The light is wonderful. If it was mine I would certainly have it printed big and framed.

Yes thanks Jamie.
On that thread I notice a few others like it too.
And on his Flickr site quite a few raves.
A second look, I also like the border round it which normally I can live with or without. Without a doubt a humdinger. Definitely a 10.

That much I get but in Inverewe there are several hundred varieties. Which is why I should write it down. If you can give the latin (& common) name it comes across as if you know what you are talking about. (S***ta**e in other words)
I have a good idea where in the garden the plant was (only 54 acres) but even going back this weekend it will have faded. It is noticeable with Rhodies, Magnolias and Azeleas that the flowers go over very quickly and often suffer from little burns on the sides of the petals. I notice some of my other pictures from the day show this. I was obviously not paying enough attention.
Sometimes you only get one day to get the bloom and I have a succulent in the conservatory that flowers for 2 hours at a time.

Re: Picture of the day

Duncan - apologies - you clearly had a good idea what it was!

I try to give the latin name where I know (tho I'm not always 100%) in case someone is searching for an image of just that species, be it animal/vegetable/mineral.

I don't think I commented on the image, which as has been said is vibrant, and you've kept control of the highlights too.

Re: Picture of the day

[QUOTE=Johnheatingman;
I checked todays galley and found this one posted by "Stoates". To me it is a bright and colourful image and in a nutshell...... I liked it.

[/QUOTE]

Many thanks for the nomination. I can't help feel though that I need to spend a bit more time with this one in PP and crop out some of the bare harbour floor in the top left and right of the image?

This is a great post for getting us to look at the present and past gallery submissions; there are many sensational images out there but I would like to put this one up as today's 'Image Of The Day' - a seascape by KEITHBD with excellent composition and colour and a great sense of drama.

Re: Picture of the day

My choice for today is this one by Dogcow.

I enjoy the angle of this and the use of the trees in the background which mimic the red tulip, standing tall and separate from the yellow.

Re: Picture of the day

I haven't looked at this forum for a while. There's some nice stuff in here which I don't see in the gallery - even though my favourites link to the gallery. Maybe if the gallery home page could show some of todays photos as well as the random selection?

Anyhow, that seascape by KEITHBD is superb (although a tad tilted maybe??) and Dogcow's tulip shot is a really nice composition with great colours.

From todays crop, CaptainD's Starlingpecker caught my eye, a very unusual pose for a starling and well executed:

(And two of mine in here - cheers chaps)
