Fire!

Before I continue, I must apologise in advance for the quality of these images - my e520 isn't good in poor light, much less in pitch black with no flash at one o'clock in the morning!

Well, I had an interesting night last night!

I was just starting to get ready for bed when I noticed a strange orange glow coming through the kitchen window...when I looked outside, I was greeted with this...I suspect the blurriness is down to a combination of poor light and intense fear as I saw the flames leaping just six feet away from my back door!

My first instinct of course was to grab my camera, but I did take the precaution of dialling 999 first!

The shed in the yard next door was ablaze, with flames leaping about twenty feet into the air, and soon the inferno had spread to the empty house at the top of the street...I'm SO lucky the wind was blowing away from my house, which is on a terraced street.

The Fire Brigade were soon on site and it was amazing to see the way they tackled it...I know they are highly trained, but to see them don their protective gear and breathing apparatus and walk into the midst of a blazing inferno is truly awesome.

Luckily the house at the top of the street was unoccupied...this is the resulting devastation...

This (the house next to mine) was occupied, but the residents are OK. Looking at the shattered window and the melted door, the Fire Brigade got there just in time.

Once the fire was out and the immediate danger was over, I took out a tray with loads of cups of coffee for the firefighters whilst they continued to damp down the smouldering remains, then emailed the photo's to my local paper...

I may complain at times about the way my Oly copes in poor light, but considering that these were all taken with ISO 400 (in the heat of the moment, I totally forgot to change it!) I'm quite pleased to have come out with something!

Now it's off to bed with me...I've been up since five o'clock yesterday morning, and I'm now shattered!

Janet

PS. A massive well done to the crew at Padiham Fire Station!

Re: Fire!

Thanks for sharing ! How interesting your Reportage is! I feel that some of these are lovely shots, emotive as 2. The clear outline of a Firemans helmet in front of the golden glow of flames ! and 4 & 5 too !

Re: Fire!

I can't believe I was actually out there taking photographs when at any minute the flames could have spread to my house!

This is not a hobby, it's a bloody obsession....

Re: Fire!

Nice pictures! Actually the flames radiate a fair amount of brightness so it can be surprisingly easy to photograph, especially bonfires and the like.

Re: Fire!

You've captured them well & I'm glad you & the neighbours are fine. Fire is one thing we dread here in Australia. It has no mercy (except by some miracle it jumps one house to burn down the next).

Re: Fire!

I commented on these shots on Flickr, they're excellent. I didn't realise it was next door. Yikes

Re: Fire!

Handled like a true pro, Janet. Despite all that was going on in the heat of the moment you got the pictures - excellent reportage!

Re: Fire!

They used two of them under the headline "Blaze Drama" on the front page of their midweek edition of the newspaper today...I must admit it was nice to see on the news stand, but hey, they could have asked first!

My fault, I guess, from not adding any usage instructions in my email when I sent the pics to the newsdesk.

That's OK, Janet. They assumed they could use them, you assume you will be paid - just send them an invoice, they must have a "usual rate" they pay for this type of work!

I've never done this sort of thing before...how would you suggest I word it and who should I send it to?

My local fire station regularly holds fundraising events for local charities...I'm thinking I could get a donation for them. Its the least I can do after what they did for me at the weekend.
