Shuttleworth Collection evening flying display

Went to the display yesterday (Saturday 17th), met Johnathan Saull and took FAR TOO MANY Photos!

A couple of late evening ones as an appetiser!

The last two - those magnificent men in their flying machines' - are not something you normally see at an air show. They alone would have made the effort worthwhile.

Thanks for sharing and look forward to seeing more.

The two planes, the Avro and the Boxkite are the 1963 replicas manufactured for the film....

The third photo is the worlds oldest flying plane, it managed two "there and back" runs up the airstrip, flying up to 15' and for a few hundred yards each time.... they had to wait until nearly 10 before they flew it and the light was fading fast.... so this was the first run, the second I didn't get a decent photo from!

I can't remember if its a 1906 or 1909 plane, either way it's over 100 years old.... One viewer was singularly unimpressed by the flight, to which his wife (one assumes) said "when you're over a hundred I bet you couldn't even walk it!"

I didn't go the whole "Johnathan" route... I went for:

Shutter priority 1/320s(ish)
Auto ISO
Low silent (but forgot to change from 15 to 6 fps - part of the reason there's too many photos!)
Stabilisation ON (JS suggested OFF!)

EDIT:

And metering centre weighted

NB the BBMF Spit was at 1/500th, and the prop is only just blurred! I also have a few where they were taken at 1/125 and slower and the prop isn't visible.... so it's a fairly narrow window to get spot on.

Re: Shuttleworth Collection evening flying display

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, sans Lancaster - has it stopped flying?

They happened to be near so dropped in unexpectedly (well they phoned first!)

The three Shuttleworth Hurricanes (based there)

A glider, whose display was very unexpected!

Some Barnstorming

And a bit of wood with wings - again the display was fantastic!

Re: Shuttleworth Collection evening flying display

Great shots but the last two from the first post are really the stars of the set.

I must admit to being most satisfied with the Piper PA-18 Super Cub going under the bunting!

The Edwardian planes are very much the stars at any Shuttleworth display, especially when they get so many of them in the air.

There are also a stack of inter-war "light planes" that they fly whenever they can and they flew most of them on Saturday. I will add another set of photos later!

Re: Shuttleworth Collection evening flying display

A LOT more photos:

The flight-line walk around, before the "crowds"

The massive crowds...

They even have appropriate bus rides available...

An amazing set of photos. Your techniques combined with the excellent mk2 proved to be well up to scratch.

Well done.

Mrs Walti was using the MKi with the 14-150 lens and she managed some very good photos too! The lens performed better than I expected and she only had a few focus issues (due to not keeping the subject in the focus guides) the excellent conditions made for excellent photos!

EDIT:

Just had another look at hers and some of them are better than mine due to the in camera JPEG processing giving better skies! May move to JPEG and in-camera processing - it looks to give results that are every bit as good as the RAW and post processing I've been doing, without any faff!
