Posting Photos On The Boards

We seem to be getting more and more members posting links to photos or attachments on the photo boards, as opposed to posting the actual photo. This means that non-members or members who are not logged in can't see the photos unless they copy and paste the link into another browser. The forum has a very good gallery provided which, if the instructions in the home page tutorials are followed is quite easy to use. It's much easier just to open a thread and view the photos than messing around with links to other sites. If non-members can easily view the photos it promotes the Olympus name when they view the excellent photos taken with Olympus equipment.

No doubt many will disagree with this point of view but it is simply my own personal opinion.

Edit: Michael Sewell's post of "Rebecca" is a fine example of posting direct to the forum.

Re: Posting Photos On The Boards

I agree that it can be a nuisance having to go to Flickr or whatever so see the image properly.

I don't agree though that the Forum Gallery is easy to use! Maybe it takes some time to learn how it works but I personally don't find it user friendly. There is too much clutter and the various links are not well laid out.

I don't use it much for just those reasons. Maybe if you use it frequently it's easier but the learning curve is quite steep!

Re: Posting Photos On The Boards

If you upload a photo and use it immediately then there is no hastle. But searching your "my pics" window to find one of your old photos is a real pain as there is no search criteria and it just presents all your photos in date order 8 thumbnails at a time... or maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Re: Posting Photos On The Boards

In principle I agree with John, but we seem to be fighting a losing battle with the gallery, it just isn't popular with many members. Plus there is the prospect that we might lose the gallery when Ian upgrades the forum software.

Re: Posting Photos On The Boards

Many of my images are larger than the maximum 512kB file size allowed here. I have been using my Gallery space on this forum up until now but I find it easier now to link to Flickr as then I only have to upload and maintain one location.

Yes, that's pretty much my view as well.

I have to agree and sometimes don't post as I find it onerous.

Re: Posting Photos On The Boards

I prefer to use my own private web space to place my images and then I can link to them as and when needed. I can also track the number of views of the images.

Re: Posting Photos On The Boards

I use the gallery - its reasonably easy and I know who has my pictures and that the URL's will remain live

Flickr is owned by Yahoo who were sold to Verizon last year and its not clear how Verizon hope to monetise Flickr now they have got it. it could easily rename services and that would then break all the links causing more work and threads that become meaningless

Regards
Andy

Re: Posting Photos On The Boards

OMG are we finally getting round to the idea that the way us 'Joe Soaps' can display their pics on this Forum, (good, bad, or indifferent), AND does it matter anyway, is finally becoming an issue!!

Sorry but there are very many other Forums where this is not any sort of problem.

Also I find it remarkable that the ratio of members 'viewing', to those posting responses, is so low.

I don't know about Flickr but I post images here which are hosted elsewhere. I open the image on the host site. I click on it and select "Copy image address". I then paste that address here between for each.

I'm not sure how the technical make up of the forum works but it could be that non-members viewing photos are included in the total views. As non-members (Guests ) can't post comments this could explain the differential. At the moment there are 18 members and 181 Guests in the forum.

On the site which hosts my images, a ball-park ratio of viewing comments to for my images is 100 to 1.

Re: Posting Photos On The Boards

Good point John - but then even more of a concern, surely why don't Guests that view, feel they don't want to Join? As you say there are a lot of them?? And joining is no 'only a click away'

Harold, we are not talking here of how many view particular images - more about participation.
