Digital "Manipulation"

My photographic society has just had its first "Digital" competition.

This was my entry - a modern spoof on an old image

So, how many manipulations do you think it took to knock this one out?

What is deemed to be a 'manipulation'?

Re: Digital "Manipulation"

I can see that the ye olde record player was added as the lighting does not appear to match up. I also suspect that the mp4 player buttons were enhanced.

My wife thought that the photo was like me. Sitting down with headphones (usually playing TFC2)

Re: Digital "Manipulation"

I suspect add ipod, add record player and add background. I think the teddy and headphones are one shot.

I consider anything more than the basic; crop, straighten horizon, levels, colours and contrast, to be manipulation. Once you start introducing elements that are not in a single image or removing (cloning) then that's manipulated.

Thanks for that, I think the 'record' player is an addition.

Smile Re: Digital "Manipulation"

The background was created from one image, copied, reversed and pasted to create a corner.

The bear headphones and ipod are one shot but reversed.

The foreground is shaped to fit the background

and of course the cylinder player is pasted in on top of everything else

Total time to produce was about 40 - 50 minutes

Great fun as a first attempt and even more supprised when it came second.

Ok so this is not the normal type of image that gets posted but digital has such huge potential for manipulation that I believe we should get far more creative and try to re-create some of the fantastic images that were once created from many hours in darkrooms.

Thanks for the comments, I hope it at minimum brought a smile to your face

Wow, congratulations

I wouldn't have guessed you had done anything to it.

Re: Digital "Manipulation"

Found this beautiful picture from circa 1870 in the V&A online archives the other day:

Interesting to note the photography enthusiast's fondness for altering images after the exposure's been made hasn't changed in the last 150 years!
