Odd shutter nose when used with PanLeica 25mm

When I use my OMD EM5 Mk II with my Pan-Leica 25mm f1.4 lens, the camera's shutter makes a different noise than with any other generic Olympus lenses. It is louder, rather clacky and more obvious in Manual Focus but the exposure itself seems fine. This never occurs with Olympus lenses. Since the shutter action is part of the camera and independent of the lens, is there an explanation for this?

Lightbulb Re: Odd shutter nose when used with PanLeica 25mm

Well I would never have thought it...

My camera definitely sounds different with the PL25 f/1.4 than with the m.Zuiko 45 f/1.8

I even got a sound meter set up and the PL25 is 3db louder than the m.Z45mm

The shape of the peak noise trace is also slightly wider.

Everything is working perfectly, but now I know it's there, I'll be listening at the sound for all the other lenses...

Structural resonance, possibly. No other logical explanation.

On the MF only Samyang 7.5mm f3.5 Fisheye lens, the shutter sound is very slightly different from the Olympus lenses but nowhere as loud or clacky as with the Pan-Leica.

It would be interesting to add mass to the PL25 (blu-tack) and record the results - Graham has the means to do this, it seems.

Re: Odd shutter nose when used with PanLeica 25mm

There's another possible answer if you consider what happens when you fire the shutter.

It goes without saying the 'experiments' are being performed with the same shutter speed to be of any value.

I just tried the camera with several lenses in the following order, in Shutter Priority at 1/60 sec
  • Olympus 75mm f1.8
  • Olympus 17mm f1.8
  • Olympus 7-14mm f2.8 PRO
  • Olympus 60mm f2.8
  • Olympus 40-150mm f4-5.6 R
  • Panasonic 100-300mm f4-5.6
  • Pan-Leica 25mm f1.4
The shutter sound with every one of the Olympus lenses was quiet and the same. Considering that they have very different builds and the 40-150mm even has a plastic mount, can "structural resonance" be responsible?

The shutter noise was different in the two Panasonic lenses but louder in the Pan-Leica.

I can't think of anything other than structural response. What do you find at other SSs, eg 10x.

If I'm right it's the mass and geometry of the lens - yes a plastic mount will have an effect, acoustics are different in different solids.

And where exactly do you suggest I stick it...

I may do some tests with hoods on and off, just for the fun of it.

OR: Just select "silent shutter"

Oh, anywhere you want, just add mass. Removing the hood obviously reduces by a small amount, but if you are able to instrument it would be better. I'm sure you'll have an accelerometer in your tool kit, you sound like an experimental sort of person.

Played with many in the past, but not got one of those.

If you have a smartphone there is a very good "APP" that works well enough to give an indication of what the differences are.

Re: Odd shutter nose when used with PanLeica 25mm

Is it the sound of the lens iris adjusting to the F stop you've set?
Of all the lens you tried the 25 f1.4 is the fastest, hence the iris will be larger than the others and more mass must be moved as it changes from wide open for getting AF to the selected F stop at the point of exposure.

Have you tried a variety of F numbers to see if the sound changes?

The clue is in the above, what else doesn't the Samyang have?

Good point and simple to trial using M mode.
