Canon FD 50mm f1.8 on m43rds?

I already have a Zuiko 50mm f1.8 but I have got hold of a Canon one as well. I would be interested to know if anyone has used such a lens on their m43rds body and if the results are any good. I don't what to get an adapter to try it myself if the lens isn't up to much.

Re: Canon FD 50mm f1.8 on m43rds?

From what i can remember, the version of the Canon FD 50mm f1.8 that I have is neither worse nor better than the OM 50mm f1.8. It is quite a lot bigger though. I would not consider it worth investing in an adapter just for trying this lens on its own. On the other hand, having an adapter will allow you to use other FD mount lenses.

My personal opinion is that these old 35mm film fast (at or below f2) 'nifty fifty' lenses are not useable wide open on 4/3 (micro or otherwise). They all have too much spherical aberration that gives them a distinct 'glow' or softness that isn't to my taste. Of course, that glow may be what you are after. This applies to all the 20 or so such lenses that I have from various manufacturers. Some are worse than others, but all show this effect in my experience. They need to be used ideally a full stop down from wide open, though some are ok half a stop down. The best I have is the Rollei Planar 50mm f1,8, which is definitely useable with the aperture set at the click position between f1.8 and and f2.8 (whatever real aperture that gives I can't remember). I have a Miranda 50mm f1.8 that I also really like.

I have a smattering of 50mm f1.4 lenses as well, and generally I think of them as f2 lenses for the same reason. The Konica Hexanon 50mm f1.4 is staggering soft wide open but sharp at f2 and dazzling sharp at f2.8. Ironically, the good old Helios 44-2 58mm f2 I find is 100% useable wide open (though a touch soft in absolute terms).

One disadvantage of the OM 50mm 50 f1.8 is that it doesn't have a stop position between f1,8 and f2.8. This means the lens, to me, is an f2.8 lens (though I have used it successfully at f1.8 for night shooting). The Canon does have an intermediate stop position, so that might be an advantage for it (though I really can't remember how well it works at that setting).

Re: Canon FD 50mm f1.8 on m43rds?

It is my belief that the majority of lenses from the film, pre-AF, era were optimised at around f8 or f11.

The body is willing but the mind is weak.
