Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Woodcock
I haven't seen one of these before and when it kindly posed on the other side of the river I managed a couple of shots before it flew off into the trees.
There was also a Coot in the area, but I wasn't quick enough to get a shot of that!
I am glad I went to the trouble of taking the 'big lens' with me on the dog walk.

One for Ron. Knowing you are interested. First day out.

Summer Leys Geese
Olympus 75-300mm at 300mm with G9

I always liked the 75-300 I'm sure the 300mm would be nicer at 300mm but not too shabby.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

That looks very good Peter. Was it taken using SAF or CAF? I think the 75-300 is a great lens for the price and definitely much easier to carry than the much more expensive alternatives.

The answer is not really sure. I tried most things. I was having trouble with predicting what I'd find so I was swapping a lot. But it is so easy to swap between the two, just a small convenient rotor switch CAF, SAF and MF. I tended to use SAF for pinpoint focus which gives you a magnified view of the focus point picture in picture (very helpful as I also have peaking and SAF+MF selected). But new to the G9 there is a button adjacent to the grip to give you PIP enlarged focus when ever you want it in any mode so I may leave CAF on more.

I did spend 5 minutes with a goldcrest. It was a very lively one but I got a few shots

I have now found all of the fast focus settings are pre programmed into the three custom settings on the PASM dial so swapping is very fast. So much to learn .

But it is really good with Olympus lenses so I may be able to share more which show the Olympus lenses off well. And I kept the em5 mk2 as I love it.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

On Thursday I went to our local woods to see if I could find any of the Firecrests which I had heard over-winter there. I got this close to a shot of one but, unfortunately, the score is Firecrest 1 : 0 Ron.

Ron

Well that is closer than I have ever got. I have heard them...but not seen.

So closer to a 'goal'less draw...

Garden Birdwatch turned this pair up today. heavy rain so photos plug....

Anyone able to confirm or otherwise that they are Reed Buntings.

Unusual, not many reeds in the area, tho' a river and farmland close by...

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

On a Sunday walk, not really prepared I came across this guy (rare sighting here) and managed to get a record shot before he dived. Not best of light and not the best angle either. Anyway, new species on my list.
