90'th Anniversary Teaser....

.... for theChurchPhotographer.

Fairford St Mary's Church.

E-3, 9-18

The update will appear on theChurchPhotographer next week with several more photos.

These are actually the shots I didn't like a month ago - interestingly the softness was around boundaries between overexposure and details (say on the window tracery), I'm wondering if it was a product of using the lens with a protective filter causing a slight scatterring which Photomatix amplified.

Re: 90'th Anniversary Teaser....

Hi Nick, glad to see you are putting that 9-18mm to good use, but sorry to hear you've had softness issues.

Your theory about the filter and Photomatix may be right, it's worth trying the lens with filter removed in those situations. Hope you are able to resolve this.

The lens itself is commendably sharp (as you would expect from an Olympus lens sold by a reputable seller). The issue was around the boundary between massively blown areas and hard edged lines (an inevitable situation when you have things like church windows). For these shots I was able to exclude some of the component images from the merge and get rid of the softness (and no it wasn't an alignment issue, IS (which of course was off), or one of the oddities that auto alignment can cause).

I'll be doing some tests - but now that I've worked out the areas in which it occurred it's not really an issue. Church interiors do work the lens and photomatix quite hard.

Re: 90'th Anniversary Teaser....

This is very interesting as I have noticed this on some church shots processed in Photomatix but only at high magnification. Next time I will leave the filter off.

What are you worried about Nick. I would be very proud if I had taken these shots.

Re: 90'th Anniversary Teaser....

Thanks all.

90'th Anniversary = well it's the 90'th church on the site.

Not a particularly great number, but well it means a 100 is in reach.

As to softness/other issues - well the shots I am showing are sharp throughout, but I found it necessary to restrict the range of input files to achieve that sharpness. What the reason is - well I've got ideas but not proof.
