New Year's Day Swim, Barry Island

The New Year's Day Swim is held every year on Barry Island. I haven't ventured on to the beach to photograph the craziness before but decided to give it a go this year with my Olympus OM-4ti and some cheap Fuji C200 film (1.50 per roll).

Having not been to it before I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of photography and I wasn't really expecting to come away with any decent shots, it was more of a reconnaissance so I will be prepared for future events.

It was pretty chaotic when it all kicked off with about 2,000 people running down the beach and a scrum of photographers jostling for position to get shots. Of course, having a manual focus camera with about 18 shots left on a film is probably not ideal for this kind of event but I was quite happy with what I managed to get.

I also took some on my little Olympus Mju II point and shoot, also on Fuji C200.

And no, I didn't swim myself!

Good set, Roger. Makes me feel cold just looking at them, which is really what I need on the day our central heating isn't working!

Oh dear, sorry to hear about the central heating - not what you want in the middle of January. Hope it gets sorted soon.

The air temperature on New Year's Day was actually very mild, but the water was very cold so yes, I definitely wouldn't have fancied going in.

Plumber is due later today and temperature is quite mild at the moment, so should be okay. Those pics still make me feel cold though....

Hope the plumber has managed to fix it and you're feeling a bit warmer now.

Lovely collection of photographs. You have captured the mood well. The slight film grain actually adds to the feel.

Interesting to note that many of those taking part have fairly good insulation built in.
