Re: The new PEN-F proves beauty has no need for DSLR beasts

Graham and I are on our way to the launch event at the Design Museum in London

I hope I will be able to post some photos via my tablet and Olympus Image Share (OIS).

I'm beginning to regret not going, but I'm sure that the journey would have just been too much. Hope you all have a great time.

Re: The new PEN-F proves beauty has no need for DSLR beasts

Oh my, that does look like my sort of camera... It could replace my GX-7, act as mate to the EM-5 (same battery, I think) and then I would be fully back with Olympus.

However I figure the price will be eye watering to start with. I will wait and see.

Haha, no - John, Graham and I are having a moderators' meeting over at John's neck of the woods because he isn't very mobile at the moment.

I think the earliest we'll see an E-M1ii will be Photokina in September although I am now hearing that top end camera lifecycles may be extended to 4 years, so September 2017...

Incidentally, although the Pen F may look like an E-P5 replacement, the E-P5 remains a current model for now.

If that is the case are there any features on the Pen-F which could find their way to the E-M1 via firmware updates?

I suspect not. The Pen F has a new 20 megapixel sensor and a new TruePic image processor. One key new features is the image profiler and it wouldn't surprise me if that was specific to the new processor. The Pen F doesn't have phase detect AF, which remains exclusive to the E-M1.

Ian
Both the E-M1 & PEN-F are specified in using TruePic VII image processor, so is there actually a difference in the processors or is that the same & the memory buffer faster & larger instead?

I thought I also read that the E-M1 was the only one to get Focus Stacking as it was the only one with a large enough buffer, so is it possible they could do more for it in FW? I would assume that not much more if the E-M1 II is coming this September 2016 though.

So firmware updates for the E-P5 are hopfully a possibility, sorry but I've just got one

Glad the launch went well

For me that would suit me fine 'cause that would also mean some more FW updates perhaps & spare me the GAS since that would likely be all I could get/have at this point, although somehow I would be surprised if the E-M1-II didn't come this September 2016.

Sorry not to see you there, John, but it was not a very nice day for travelling anyway. Hopefully next time the stars will align better.
