Exclamation Keep your pets safe

One of my cats died a horrible death on Monday evening, from suspected antifreeze poisoning. I had no idea this stuff was in the general environment and if an animal treads in it and licks its paws or coat afterwards it can result in a significant poisoning risk. Antifreeze can leak from vehicles and from de-icing sprays, and apparently it can be added to road salt. Please wash your pet's feet if it's been out in these conditions. I learned this the hard way when Ben started panting, shaking and howling. He was dead by the time I got him to the vet .

Re: Keep your pets safe

Thanks John. We're not 100% certain but a toxicology test would cost about 150 and not bring Ben back. The symptoms were consistent with antifreeze poisoning. Farmers and gamekeepers hereabouts are not cat-friendly but I don't think anyone around here would deliberately poison one.

Re: Keep your pets safe

I am very sorry to hear that Richard.

I would hope that antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is not added to road salt as it is highly toxic and would pollute waterways when washed off of roads.

It is however very sweet to the taste so it may be attractive to animals, although I would think it would need more than a few licks to have fatal results.

Non-toxic antifreeze is available using propylene glycol, (which is widely used in cosmetics and medicines amongst others), but this is more expensive.

Re: Keep your pets safe

Thanks all. Yes, Ben was a fine beast and didn't deserve such an end at only five years old. Fortunately my other cat is still alive and well, and under house arrest!

Otto. No mention here of the killer properties of the stamen dust from some popular Lillis? Cut or in the Garden. Apparently just as bad. Of course not an issue this time of year. Just a 'heads up'.

Re: Keep your pets safe

Thanks iso, I didn't know that. No danger of any cut lillies in this house mind! Onions and garlic are also poisonous to cats.

Re: Keep your pets safe

Sad news Otto, I don't have a cat or any pets but my next door neighbours on either side have indoor cats, Jim and Jane have 7 cats all indoors and they are never allowed out. Katharine on the other side has two cats and doesn't let them out either. I guess that's the only way to keep them safe.

Re: Keep your pets safe

My two had been indoor cats I understand from the rehoming centre. I wanted to give them the freedom though to roam around and just be, well, cats. I live in a rural area that would normally be safe enough, I've not had any problems until now. At least Ben got to spend one of his five years in the big outdoors. He was always popping in and out through the cat flap. Coco meanwhile is now under house arrest until the weather improves.

I believe cats are deadly to a lot lof local wildlife in Australia because they are an introduced species and the locals don't realise they are predators.
