Air show shots

These shots were taken at a local air show in September, fist proper try-out with my M5 and 75-300.

I was pleased with these shots, taken in very good light. Then I started getting problems focusing, as I posted on this forum, when I began doing more difficult shoots, especially indoors. I promised to post some of these aircraft shots, so here you are!
Enjoy.
Any comments, good or bad, very welcome.

Re: Air show shots

Hi there Keith!

Very nice images - especially as a first go with the lens / camera combination. My favourite has to be the Pitts Special, a really nice crisp shot.

Cheers,

Ralph.

Re: Air show shots

All great shots there Keith - maybe a tad more contrast in #1 would give it more zing.

The wingwalker shot is just the beez neez!

Re: Air show shots

Thanks both. The L29 in #1 was going like a bat out of Hell! I was astonished to get that shot, it was near the 300 end of the lens, and the aeroplane must have been doing 350, 400 MPH at about 100 feet.

Mark, I don't think it needs more contrast, because it's starting to halo; but a shade more brightness might give it the zing. It's a little dull - I posted the wrong image... How about this?:

Re: Air show shots

A really good collection. Some of those planes look very close, the pilots must be very talented. Great photographs.

Yes Keith, 'contrast' was the wrong call, I meant brightness just as above. My bad

Great set Keith and looks good to me, nothing to offer has I have never shot airplanes in flight and have no idea what it entails.

Re: Air show shots

Thanks all. I was amazed to get such good results first time with the M5 and 75-300. I do have some good shots at Jersey Air Show, and also at Shuttleworth. If anyone is keen I could put some on Foto Fair.

The biggest issue is catching the aircraft in the right place, right attitude, Paul. Shots of the underside generally aren't seen as 'good'.

Shots like the wingwalker aren't difficult generally, because they fly at only about 100 MPH (the poor wingwalker gets wiped out much faster!); planes like the L29 are hard to keep in frame, focus, and capture correctly with a powerful lens, because of their speed. The fast multi-shot rate on the M5 helped with that. I also found the Mustang difficult in flight, because it's so agile as well as fast; you want to get it so as to crop as little as possible, which means more lens power, but then you're up against the framing/focus issue with a very quickly approaching and manouevring machine!

A lot of people rate shots of the Red Arrows, but myself, I've always found them easy, because they aren't all that fast, and you can easily predict where they are going. I have a shot of a F15 at Jersey Air Show climbing, then discharging counter-measures as it looped over; it climbed so quickly, the autofocus on my Canon 40D with Tamron 70-300 wouldn't keep up with it! Here it is approaching teh top of its climb, with ice crystals coming off the wings:

Also to me. LOL
Nice set Keith. I agree with you on the hunting of the 75-300 with fast moving planes, but you can overcome that by setting your camera to either CAF+MF or SAF+MF. I always do that at airshows so I dont have toe use the burst mode.

I was quoting from memory, when I said F-15. The little grey cells sometimes go AWOL these days!! Must be an age thing....
