E-M5 EVF Settings question

Normally I have the EVF set to mode 3 but I've just been trying some of the other settings including setting a grid display. For whatever reason these settings (in Custom Menu J) only seem to work if the EVF eye sensor is set to "on". If it's "off" I cannot get a grid to show nor choose any EVF mode other than mode 3. Is this normal, and if so, why? It seems rather odd. The manual is as usual less than clear on this, and David Busch's book no better!

I normally have the eye sensor set to "off" so it doesn't switch the EVF on if I'm wearing the camera round my neck so it lays against my chest.
