Sad news about my favouriote airliner

Hoping against hope, production of my favourite airliner will cease. The A380 is big, beautiful (in my eyes) and super comfortable - well, and just plain impressive.

While passengers like me loved it, the airlines - apart from Emirates - never fell in love with it, sadly.



An outing for the E-5 and 90-250 when invited to tour the as-then, unfinished, Heathrow terminal 2, in 2013. This was taken from the press gallery

And this clip sends shivers up my spine


At least these friendly beasts will still be flying for another couple of decades.

Spent a week of a year on one flying to and from Oz in 2011, when my Dad was on his last legs. A good aircraft for the passenger anyway. Prefer it to the 777's...…..sad, but alas progress I suppose...……...

Do they need special infrastructure at the airport to get the passengers (the "self-loading cargo" as Cabin Pressure had it) on and off the two decks at the same time? I imagine that could be quite a barrier to widespread adoption.

I believe that A380s can operate out of any airport with a suitable runway and apron area but for regular service, you'd need a two-storey loading arrangement and roomy gate area.

One of the practical issues is that it can take significantly longer to get everyone onboard because of the sheer numbers.

But some of the other, newer, stretched long haul wide-body jets like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350 also carry very large numbers of passengers.

The main reason for the lack of interest among most airlines for the four-jet A380 is that it's not as fuel-efficient as the twin-jets. You need a fully-loaded A380 to be profitable. Emirates' hub and spoke route topology works well for the A380 and their competitive pricing has kept passenger numbers up. However, more and more people want direct flights and this is where the efficient but smaller twin-jets score.

I read an article that suggested the A380 could be made significantly more fuel-efficient if its wings could be wider, but most airports would struggle accommodating the extra width while the planes were taxiing on the ground.

In fact an Air France A380 did clip a parked plane in New York, if I recall.

Nevertheless, especially upstairs, the A380 is very quiet, stable and smooth. It's quite a distinctive experience compared to flying on other jets. I remember flying on a 747 after am A380 and realising just how noisy the 747 was by comparison!

Given the sheer size of it, I wouldn't be surprised if it went from carrying passengers, to carrying cargo? Perhaps, with a few alterations even both at the same time ? A case of the upstairs and downstairs are you being served. Given the future that could await the UK, we should have already been thinking outside the box.

That does sound logical, but - unlike the 747, which was designed, right from the start, to be function both as a cargo and a passenger aircraft, I've read that the A380 design is fully-optimised for passenger duties only.

The 747 can be retro-fitted with nose-up access to the cargo area.

A380s will continue to be flown by Emirates, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, BA, Korean Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa, ANA (Japanese airline), Thai Airways, Malaysian, China Airlines, etc. for some time yet. But some airlines, like Qatar Airways, have said they will return their aircraft once the 10 year leases are up. 10 years is still youjng for a plane like an A380 - some of BA's 747s are around 25 years old and still flying regularly.

If off-lease A380s can't find new operators among regular airlines, like a few of the earliest Singapore Airlines examples, for example, they can be used for short-contract lease work (Norwegian recently operated one for a few weeks to New York while some technical problems with their regular aircraft were sorted out, for example) or charter work. Some may be mothballed.

Airbus was hopeful that the Chinese would order some for their rapidly expanding market but that didn't come to anything.

Sad news indeed - that flyby wasn't at Filton they could never have had that much nice weather in Bristol

My favourite flyby's when I worked there were the Tornado's which used to set off all the car alarms in the car park when the afterburner was used, and the day they had 2 F16's and a spitfire in formation - one flat out and one wheels down to slow down - you can guess which

I think the writing was on the wall when the first one to fly was put up for parts rather than leased or sold to an operator.
Seemed like a weird thing to do at the time.
