Section 44 Suspended

From Liberty's site:-

"08 Jul 2010

The Home Secretary today announced the suspension of the broad stop and search powers found in section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

This widely discredited power, that allowed blanket stop and search without any suspicion of terrorism, was designated in secret by senior police officers and past Home Secretaries often on a rolling basis across whole counties of England and Wales."

A rare outbreak of Common Sense!

Now, let's just hope it is carefully communicated to the front line police using small paragraphs, short sentences and words of no more than two syllables.

Maybe a short nursery rhyme might help:-

Geogie Porgie PCSO
Chased the togs and hassled them so
But he can't do it anymore
Because they've scrapped Section 44.

Why do I still feel we have not heard the end of this?

It has run out and is not being extended over here also.

Oh, I'm sure you are right, James, but it is a milestone and I think we can afford ourselves a celebration and cautious optimism for the future. So far the new government are keeping their word on this issue and I wouldn't have expected more from them at this stage. We shall see.

My prediction(s)...

[0] The police will find another pretext for harassing the innocent, until..
[1] It is replaced with something even more convenient for the "authorities".

Then we will continue to resist, campaign and protest, making life just as difficult for them as they do for us. Simples.

I think we should try not to be too cynical. Civil rights was a central plank of the Lib-Dems election platform and Dave needs to keep them on side. There is some evidence that senior police officers are embarrassed at some of the adverse publicity and will be glad to be shot of S44. In Hampshire our Chief Constable, nearly a year ago, decided not too seek any further authorities for its use unless there was hard intelligence in relation to specific targets. S44 has not been used here since.

We have suffered 10 years of steady erosion of our liberties I am cautiously optimistic that the tide, if not turned, is at least not rising further.
