Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

We have triggered Article 50 as the people requested so that's an end to that referendum. We now need to consider whether that was a good idea or not because it's becoming increasingly clear that it wasn't. The predictions of doom haven't materialised yet because we haven't left, thank goodness!

There are plenty of groups that have no particular political axe to grind, such as the BMA, the food industry, and the CBI to name but three.

I agree totally. Unfortunately "immigrant" is jumped on by racists to apply their prejudices.

Our local Coop is staffed, at most times, by Asians and East Europeans. I have never met a more pleasant and helpful group of people. Sometimes there are staff which we would readily recognise as being "one of us" and they are equally pleasant and helpful.

Immigration is about numbers and ensuring that incomers have a useful contribution to make to the community in this crowded country.

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

Article 50 just sets the start date fo leaving. We actually leave March 2019 so we certainly haven't done what was requested in the referendum yet.

Your choice of organisations with no vested interests is interesting.

The CBI is made up of large companies who enjoy the benefits of being in the EU as they use it as a barrier to new competition. They are the same CBI that said the world would end if we don't join the Euro. They also receive money from the EU.

The food industry - who in particular ?

The BMA - They claim it will be catastrophic - because we won't be able to get doctors and nurses. Why not they will still be able to get visas and come. Qualified staff from non EU countries seem to be able to do it. In fact there are more of them than from the EU.

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

No offence was meant by the ‘leave idiots’ comment but the whole thing has turned into a complete mess, courtesy of our lightweight politicians. Take Cameron (call me Dave) for example, who took us into this promising he’d respect whatever was decided and work to make whatever it was a success and then what did he do? He ran away and hid in a shepherds hut.
I was torn over what to vote, on one hand I wanted to vote leave, based not on any race ticket (I firmly believe that the vast majority of ordinary people want to live in peace and harmony and just get on with their lives) but on the basis of the huge wastes of money funding a whole other level of ‘democracy’ moving every month from Brussels to Strasbourg and back again, ad infinitum. Paying huge sums of money to fund this seemed a waste of the ordinary mans money to fund the ridiculous junkets all the so called politicians enjoyed.
The EU seems like yet another trough for another layer of politicians to get their grubby snouts into. (Can anyone sense I have scant respect for most politicians?)
On the other hand I could see the immense cultural variety we now enjoy thanks to Johnny Foreigner coming to live here, the benefits of less bureaucracy when travelling and just plain old variety! I’m sure I can think of more but it’s time for another G&T!

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

Anyone remember the Irish referendum on the Lisbon treaty? They, the electorate, obviously got it wrong the first time, so guess what...ah sure we'll hold another referendum, and another until they get it right.

I'm bored with project fear, they can't think of anything new. I won't respond any more to repeated baseless arguments.

Project la, la, la - I can't hear you, then!

Forget any arguments for and against for now; don't alarm bells ring when arch Brexiteers like Rees-Mogg advise moving your money out of the country and no benefit will be felt for 50 years, or Johnson saying **** business (or was it industry)?

Answer to wrong question. I was asking about the contribution for EU immigrants.

Fine. I'm obviously wasting my time here so I'm off. I'll just sit back and watch the chaos unfold. Time for a Jameson's (which has gone up alarmingly since the pound tanked!).

EU people coming here? Iím sure there are both pluses and minuses, Iíve luckily only experienced the pluses, example: out for a pub lunch on Fri, the staff were, frankly Ďeffin useless, guess what, they were young English lads, probably from very well to do local families in the local well to do village, the member of staff that can come along and give a decent level of service is a young Romanian girl, so different, excellent customer service skills, a credit to the establishment [Greyhound pub, Sydling St Nicholas, Dorset)
She deserved a tip, they most certainly didnít.

Where am I going with this?

Otto,

We are all wasting our time if we think one syllable of what we write will make any difference to the outcome.

The Brexit ballad... with apologies to The Ballad of East and West by Rudyard Kipling.

Oh, some voted In, and some voted Out, and never the twain shall meet, Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgment seat; But there is neither In nor Out, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth, When two strong men stand face to face, though they come from the ends of the earth!
