Preferred photo sharing service (Flickr/Pbase/Picasa...)

Hi all,

What photo sharing service would you consider most adequate to put your photographs on display, targeting an audience that shares your interests? (In opposite to sharing pictures in large with your family/friends, for which you would probably use communities e.g. facebook or blogs).

What would you recommend among the following?

Flickr?
Picasa?
Pbase?
Photobucket?
Other?

Re: Preferred photo sharing service (Flickr/Pbase/Picasa...)

I've used Flickr for years, but I'm increasingly using Google+

I have a "circle" with over 500 UK photographers in it and find it invaluable for help/advice and comments.

There are also hundreds of specialised groups. It just takes a bit of getting used to!

Re: Preferred photo sharing service (Flickr/Pbase/Picasa...)

Up until the advent of Google+ I found Picasa WebAlbums really useful for being able to show private/semi-private albums to artists friends or customers. A simple interface, that was easy to navigate and clear to look through the various images . . . . .
however, since I joined Google+ the album display set up is different and less end user friendly as far as I and the viewers are concerned. Logic seems to have gone out the window in terms of the ease of customer view, and their ability to view at a range of different sizes and the ease of downloading those images. So I'm not a happy bunny!

Zenfolio is my alternative, (although I also use Photobucket but again less happy with the ease of linking, viewing and making life happy for the end user) as at least I can control the viewable image size, add buying options, etc, and the interface for the end user is fairly simple and straight-forward.
[If anyone is interested and not already a Zenfolio user, use my referral code 6X8-QUK-GXZ - it will give a 10% discount on their membership charges + add credit to my account!]

I also in the past tried JAlbum but had some minor issues re ease of use especially at the time, although I've not tried it of late.

Regards
Chris

Hi Janet, interesting to hear your views on Google+

I like the "circles" aspect of it and am having fun using it as almost an art project to see what gains reactions/responses and what time of the day gets most responses, etc. but golly it's a very limited shelf life for your images as they disappear quickly down and then off the page in seconds and minutes!
How are you interacting with other photographers, do you limit yourself just to those in that circle or are you open to the world??
I feel that there should be an easier way just to interact with individual circles for particular projects but there doesn't seem to be a clear simple way - I could perhaps cut down on some in my over large photography circle to just those who post regularly and who have clear profiles, as there always seems to be a few who give minimal details, do little for a time and then suddenly start posting loads of animated gifs or videos, etc.
I also love the international aspect to it but hoping that doesn't open a can of worms in the future!

Regards
Chris

Re: Preferred photo sharing service (Flickr/Pbase/Picasa...)

Chris,

I make most of the stuff I share public, but occasionally I'll just share it with one of my circles...ie friends/UK Photographers etc. I like the way that you can see content from everyone or just your circles...makes it much easier to control! That way my friends aren't inundated with photography related stuff and my photography circle doesn't have to listen to brass band gossip!

There are over 2650 people who have added me to their circles...mostly totally random - people who will just add shared circles and anyone, just to get their numbers up. I don't go in for this sort of thing at all, and I NEVER add a shared circle unless I'm sure of where it's come from.

I tend not to add anyone unless they've filled in their profile with at least basic information...ie. where they're from, what their interests are etc. I'm really only on Google+ for the photography side of it - I have Facebook to keep in touch with friends/relatives etc.

I had some of the "big name" international photographers in my circles at first, but quickly became annoyed at all the advertising and self-publicity...now I have them in their own little circle and I can just take a quick peep every now and again...my, some of them are so "up" themselves, but there are a few who produce some excellent training videos.

I look at the public stream most days, and only add people who I feel are relevant and produce interesting stuff. I'm also ruthless at removing people who post lots of animated stuff and music/videos etc!

There are quite a few Olympus users on there...I'm still trying to round 'em all up and put them in one circle - I should have been more organised when I started. It's taken me months to get everything organised (I was on the beta trial) but now I'm absolutely loving it!

Make sure to add me to your circles!

Janet

Re: Preferred photo sharing service (Flickr/Pbase/Picasa...)

For me:
Photobucket, Picasa, Flickr, Webshots. Depending on the sort of photos i have shot. Photobucket exclusively for aviation photography, rest depending on the topic or with whom I want to share it with.
For friends/family only i use Facebook.
Works for me.

I like 500px, the standard of photography seemed higher than a lot of the other sites but I haven't signed in for a few months.

Thanks all for sharing your view and experience and also mentioning some services I never heard of... I will digest and have a look (this weekend?), if I have more specific questions I will raise them later.

Re: Preferred photo sharing service (Flickr/Pbase/Picasa...)

I was using Picasa but the upload limit is annoying, Flickr just lets you keep going (300MB per calendar month) so I worth a shout, you can also add groups and then share photo's into different groups which I have found to be a great way to share you photo's and get feedback from people.

Google+ is also worth a look too IMO as its well thought out and works very well
