Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Some from a couple of weeks ago that I should have posted but wasn't of a mind to do so. All 3 images taken in Hawthorn Dene Nature reserve.

Shield bug with apiece of the shield missing !

What I hope is a Golden bloomed grey longhorn (although according to my book they do not get this far north -the book was discredited in an earlier post and I haven't got the Harold recommended replacement yet.)

Happy to be corrected.

Roger

Roger,

Yes, The Green Shield-Bug often has such damage.

The longhorn name is correct.

Still trying with the Sigma 150mm. This little "B" flew back and forth about 50 times in five minutes but flatly refused to face the camera.

Thanks for looking.

If you label them as bum shots and post them on perves dot com (sorry I meant Fliquer dot com) you'll get thousands of views.

This is some web ! Looks more like candy floss. Maybe Harold can give some details of the occupant.

Not facing the camera as usual, but I had no intention of trying to make it move

Regards,

John

Thanks for that vital bit of information David but I don't think I'll bother

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Another batch - from today.

as (hopefully) can be seen from the first image there are lots of cinnabar caterpillars about, strangely they were mainly on two plants. There were so many it was difficult to choose which one to try and photograph.

This one was hungry

This one should have been full after eating the whole leaf.

This poor specimen was flying about nearby. Obviously a survivor - but how to record that in the great butterfly count ?

Also came across another froghopper - more common this year than previously.

Roger,

Yes, we have Cinnabars in our garden each year, leaving Ragwort and Groundsel to grow for them. We are seeing quite a few first instars when the first batches are now clearly fourth.

They are now very good at moving to adjacent plants so we help them out. It doesn't always work out. Those we moved to one lone plant were ejected by black ants.

Bumble Bee Relaxing

I always check if immobile bees in my garden are in need a some sugary feed to get them going again. This one seemed to just be taking in the sun on this pink Hydrangea.

EM-1, Oshiro 2:1 60mm macro, f11 or f16, twin TTL flash, hand-held.

Harold
