Oak Bush Cricket Meconema thalassimum Flash-proof?

This differs from the Southern Oak Bush Cricket in having fully-formed wings. Both species are insectivorous. Both live in my garden but this is the first time I have seen this species.

I was cursing the overhanging foliage of a shrub when I drew a bucketful of rainwater from a water butt underneath it. I looked down at the bucket to sees this cricket on its side on the surface film of the water. I lifted it out with the tip of my finger and placed it on a leaf of a nearby potted i]Canna[/i]plant.

I tried flash photography but there is something about the surface structure of the insect which reflects flash as a very bright light, obscuring any detail. I have never seen anything so extreme, having photographed hundreds of insect species with flash. This was the case in lateral or head-on view, so I changed to aperture priority, shade shots. The last two (partly-processed) images illustrate this).

EM-1, Oshiro 2:1 60mm macro. ISO 2000 for the first, 1/50 second, ISO 1600, 1/80 to 1/125 second for the others. Some were at f8 and some at f11. Hand-held.

All the images have been cropped.

Harold
