Warning. Just step away from..

.. the Mazda garage?

We have two nice reliable cars that do what we want. You can probably get 2.7 cards on our drive.

Despite this, I have had a rush of blood to the head and got all tempted by the idea of a cheap MX5 now that its summer. The 7 to 10 year old 1.8s strike me as a neat way to experience the MGB* idea but with real performance and handling but without all that rust... I've done my research. Some of them are actually quite quick, and everyone says they are the real deal for a back to basics sports car. I've even joined the forum and lurked.

We so very nearly went to look at an old dog at the local Mazda garage today - then I had a moment of clarity. Rewind to all that ice and snow. It was insanely difficult to get either of our cars onto the drive without hitting the other one. We don't need a stupid little sports car. So - No! Just say no and step away from the car.

.

I am doing the right thing aren't I

Pete

*I grew up near Abingdon in the early 60s and saw brand new MGBs on the local roads every day.

Edit

I have got previous with 10 year old sports cars. I bought this monster in 1986. Of course, I was younger then..

Re: Warning. Just step away from..

Unless you are going through a mid-life crisis, Pete, forget it. As an ex-owner of an MG TA, TR3, (albeit many years ago), and a great many years with my legs under the steering wheel, I know that (1) Summer won't last, (2) Winters do and (3) 0.7 space is not enough and (4) Comfort is a great thing. But perhaps that is my age!

Re: Warning. Just step away from..

I guess it depends on your finances/space.

Personally I've a Marlin, as in my avatar. I bought it with a hard top as well as the ragtop, but hardly ever fit it even in the winter.
A good blast on a sunny February day with the top down really blows the cobwebs away. ( I do wear a down jacket and a Russian furry flying helmet though.)
A mate of mine used to hillclimb a Westfield V8, which gave his son an interest in such things. He started circuit racing a smaller Westfield, but has now taken up racing an MX5 as the grids weren't competitive enough in the Westy.
His Dad's now building another Westfield for himself.
I bought his spare V8 a while ago for my Landrover, but that's another story.

I think your main problem will be needing a bigger drive if the bug gets you.

Yep... Well spotted. I just wish I had cleaned it before I took the picture.

Aaah that old 911. I ran it as my only car for 7 years and did quite a lot of the servicing myself, changed the clutch, re-set the suspension, changed the disks, scarey stuff. But that was then and this is now.

If I am really honest, BobS is right - I know I should step away from the sports car. Silly idea at my age. Hmm. Harley Davidson though...

Pete, there is a man who works near to us and, according to his wife, is going through a mid-life crisis. He has three Harleys! You could fit those into 0.7 space.

Re: Warning. Just step away from..

I run a Smart Roadster Coupe - we beat all the Westfields except the Cosworth engined monsters, and beat the porsche, and the MX5s and ... well all of the field except the Lotus Elise team.
6 hour endurance race, and the non-Cosworth Westfields brought the team average lap count down.
I was surprised to be overtaking the VX220 (but overtaken by the 220R) as I thoguht beign basically a Lotus design they'd beat us. Not so.

I bought my car as a toy commuter, ragtop, heated leather seats, aircon ... and at 8 years old and 127000 miles it's hardly something I'd expect to beat the bigger cars around Mallory Park.

No.. no no no
Don't do this to me :-)

I did enjoy that old 911 for years. Buying it was the riskiest thing I ever did: It was the dog in the corner at Nick Faure's garage bought with no guarantee for £8k in 1986 It had clearly been clocked so had probably already done 120k miles. (I'd had a mate who had a 2.4E a few years before and we stripped and rebuilt that between us, so I did know some of the pitfalls)

By the time I finished with my 2.7 six or seven years later it was pretty tidy, but I had to let it go for four and a half. The new owner was at least as keen as me, he took the rubbish decals off the sides, gave it Fuchs alloys and spent more money on it. He had connections with the TV industry, and some time in the mid 90's my old car appeared on Top Gear as part of a practical classics piece

Aaah. Happy days. There's nothing quite like driving a 911, I still look at them and say to myself.. "I had one of them.."

Pete

As apprentices, we used to laugh our socks off if someone turned up on an old camel like a Harley! That was years ago, but they're still camels!

I refer to them as farm tractors although modern farm tractors are quieter and have better brakes than your typical Harley.

There's a Triumph Speed Triple for sale locally but I've avoided the temptation so far.

Stand firm, Pete. Think of your family's inheritance! Do you want to spend it?
