OM type split focus screen for E-510 and legacy lenses?

Me again!

I stumbled across this on t'internet yesterday: http://myolympus.org/E510/focusscreen/

Now, with me trying my old OM2 50mm 1.8 and newly acquired 1.4 lenses in manual mode I had already thought how well the OM split screen had worked for me 30 years ago to get focus spot on.

Would this replacement screen work?
How would it affect auto focus with the standard digital lenses and would I still see the three illuminating spot focus points in the viewfinder once altered to the OM screen?
What other repercussions???

Looks like a wonderful enhancement if it worked for both OM and E lenses!?

I don't have any experience of these but I'm sure some members here have...

Re: OM type split focus screen for E-510 and legacy lenses?

Just found this: http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8816

It seems the three red light focus points in the viewfinder will disappear, but if I select only the centre point in the menu, and I tend to use this one anyway moving the lens to the desired focus area before half pressing the button, then I'll still hear the beep and see the green light in the viewfinder.

Hmmm......... $105 for a 'Katz Eye' one is a little more than I expected!

Here is me replacing the E400 screen with a Katzeye

http://www.snaar.co.uk/snaarp6.html
If you are ultra careful it is possible to swap the screen and end up with a nice clean view of the world. Yes, the split screen works, no, you lose your little red AF dots.

Do I recommend this mod? Hmm. Depends on your eyesight. After a while I started to doubt the accuracy of my manual focussing, and these days I have reverted to AF lenses. Younger eyes will probably do better.

There is still a possibility that the Katzeye doesn't line up with the camera (in-focus on the screen is not in-focus on the sensor) and you need to consider shimming the screen. Each time you take the screen out and shim it, you multiply the chance of dust on the screen by e^7.1 (or some other big number) so proceed with care...

Maybe this helps..

Re: OM type split focus screen for E-510 and legacy lenses?

From the other thread..

"I have changed mine on my E-450.

It is easy to do but you must be very careful not to scratch the new screeen.

Just as an aside. Since doing this I no longer see any of the 3 red dots for the auto focus on the screeen. I know they are still working as I can sometimes see the red light in a reflection somewhere from within.

Not sure if I made a ricket when I put the new screen in or not!!

Got mine from eBay (Hong Kong) took about 12 days to get here and cost £12.99

Still it works for me and should I need to change it I have the original screen."

This is the link to the one I got.

DJMC - I considered this for the same reason, but like you the cost put me off.

Live view is an alternative thatís growing on me. Particularly now I've realised you can magnify the image on liveview to get the focus spot on.

I must admit I feel more comfortable peering though the viewfinder though

Re: OM type split focus screen for E-510 and legacy lenses?

It seems the screen may darken more than the standard one, and as has been said it may not be shimmed correctly so as to focus exactly.

What about a magnifying eyecup instead of the split focus screen?
Anyone had any experience of this?

I've got the magnifying eye cup (see, I told you we had considered same options!) its OK but am underwelmed.

The real answer of course is E3, E30 or E5
I'm saving up by avoiding buying any more nik naks

In what way do these assist with legacy lens focusing?
Is it just that the viewfinder is larger and/or clearer?

I looked through both E30 & E3 the other week and was gobsmacked how big & clear the view was compared with my E520.
