Mass emergence of rare butterflies.

Just a few pictures to try and share the joy of seeing a rare butterfly (The Marsh Fritillary - Euphydryas aurinia - name added )which has been gently growing in numbers at a single site in Lincolnshire. This year, a combination of perfect conditions has produced a magnificent mass emergence.

I have never seen a living UK specimen before and had fixed to visit with a friend who lives about an hour away (its a couple of hours for me). Our plans were jolted into action when I read that from an initial couple of single reports in early May, by the weekend, those numbers had hit 500. Yesterday we were amongst several thousand.

This is a protected species across Europe, rare and in decline. It is both wonderful and also concerning to see such numbers. They are scarce because they rely upon a habitat which is all but wiped out apart from a few protected sites. When numbers soar that location is sometimes unable to sustain the demands for food-plant and the population is wiped out. 'Boom to bust' in a year. So i will keep fingers crossed.

In the meantime I can count on one hand the number of occasions in my life when I have been amongst so many butterflies. But for them to be a 'life tick' as well meant I wanted to share it with anyone who loves butterflies and maybe would be close enough to go and see for themselves.

Here are a few pictures. I tried to show abundance with the ball of 6-7 butterflies. One visitor managed to shoot seven sitting on a dandelion. Happy to give directions on a PM.

Re: Mass emergence of rare butterflies.

I can't see where you mentioned the name of the butterfly (Duke of Burgandy Fritillary).

You probably omitted it in your excitement!

No. 2 is absolutely perfect.

Re: Mass emergence of rare butterflies.

Absolutely wonderful shots Peter, first class. I can feel your excitement just looking at them .
I suspect it was your trusty 40-150 +tc but if that was with a 12-200 it's a cracking lens.

Phill you are right first time, most of them with my favourite combination. Once I had a lot of shots I also added the 60mm macro and the panaleica 12-60 but they need you to be close and I was too excited to be close at the start!!

I don't have the 12-200 it was on loan for a few shots. But you never know. I was tempted at 10% off. But will wait for 20% and then may bite. 799 seems a touch expensive.

Phill

You would normally expect some to be flying into June. Possibly the first week or maybe two. But the big numbers will be declining rapidly and condition may become an issue. I'll PM you the details as an encouragement.

Plus you can get updates here:

https://butterfly-conservation.org/i...test-sightings

....their update for Wednesday includes 'What a spectacle! Went to Chambers Farm Wood today and ventured down to Little Scrubbs Meadow - Marsh Fritillaries everywhere! Carried out a methodical and systematic count - the result was just over 1000 in the meadow and just over 2000 in the extension and this included 20 mating pairs. I would thoroughly recommend just standing and enjoying the experience of seeing such a threatened butterfly in such profuse numbers.'
