The Forgotten Camera

In terms of firmware updates this appears to be the "forgotten camera" the price of it never being launched in the US where the customer is king.

Re: The Forgotten Camera

True.

I sold my old E400 earlier this year...and I have just aquired another E400 from a forum member.

They are great little cameras and I find that I get better blue (sky) from the E400 than I normally get from the E-510.

Looks like it has had 2 firmware updates the last one in November 07. Perhaps there is nothing much wrong with it that needs updating

Re: The Forgotten Camera

Forgotten camera? Yes, exactly. Expensive camera too (at least when I bought mine...)

However its also compact, effective and produces excellent images. I intend to keep mine - but wouldn't it be great if it had mirror lockup and legacy lens focus confirm!

Oh, there goes a flying pig

I am interested in the CCD-CMOS colour rendition thing. I am planning to get a E-510 as my second (IS and live view) E-series body, but I am a tad worried by comments about the E-510 dynamic range and colour response..

Any comments from E510+E400 owners??

Pete

Re: The Forgotten Camera

And it would be nice if it got the new ORF file format. RAW files are HUGE

I'll never sell mine...

Re: The Forgotten Camera

The colours on the E400 and e510 are both great. However when there is a lot of light, I find the colours on the E400 very good.

Noise on the E400 is not so good when compared to the E510.....and IS on the E510 is worth the upgrade.

Re: The Forgotten Camera

It was expensive too, especially when you realise Olympus was probably testing the market and we were the guinea pigs, but I don't regret buying mine because I really do like it although I have to admit it's a bit noisy at high ISOs when compared with later models.

It feels a bit more like the forgotten customers.

It might be that Olympus has decided there's nothing wrong with the camera, but it would be nice if they could offer a firmware update that makes the RAW files smaller because they're far too big, and include any other suitable odds and ends Olympus knows would be useful to us as photographers. After all, if we hadn't bought the cameras and been happy with them they probably wouldn't have bothered with the later models.

I hope they're listening

Re: The Forgotten Camera

I miss mine - much as I like my e510, i wish I'd found a way to have both rather than part-exing the e400.

Re: The Forgotten Camera

This thread is timely: I am thinking of buying the wife an E4** as she is getting interested in photography again after a gap of several years, and liked the look of the E420 at a demo day recently.

Finances won't stretch to a new camera at the moment, and I've been looking at used E400 and E410 twin lens kits on Fleabay (she would like the light weight of the kit lenses). Sounds like the E400 would be a good choice based on the comments here... Anyone got any views?

Re: The Forgotten Camera

I would wait and see what new E510 go for.

The IS can be a life saver. The prices will probably drop as dealers try to shift older stock.

Ebay may have some bargins as well.

I was aware of a minor problem affecting the E400, pixel mappingand RAW.

If you have any hot or dead pixels and you shoow RAW you may have problems. If you run the pixel mapping feature, it show map them out. However I had to send one unit back to Olympus for them to map out pixels as the camera mapping feature did not work. The E400 that I recently got as hot pixels. I ran the mapping and it appeared to work. However I now shoot RAW, and it appears that the E400 does not map out any hot pixles when using RAW mode. If I use JPG it appears to work.

I have had two E400s and they both had the same problems.

Re: The Forgotten Camera

Main issue with the E-400 is that you can't turn the flash illuminated AF-assist off, which means it can be obtrusive when shooting in certain situations.

I had thought of that - passing on my E510 and using it as an excuse to buy an E3 , but she finds the E510 a bit big for her hands.

I'm 99% certain she would only shoot JPEG as she hasn't the patience to sit in front of the PC processing, but that's a very interesting point about pixel mapping problems. I'll bear it in mind!

Re: The Forgotten Camera

True, but thats when an external flash helps.

It seems that have put a negetive slant on the E400. Its remember that for some of us ( ME ) it was our first DSLR. Even with its issues, I do not regret purchasing it. Some of my favourite images were taken on it.

Yes it would be nice to Olympus to address some missing/broken features, but we do not always get what we want.
