Re: Pen-F Mono mode - a little game!

Take home message for me is two fold:

- The view that the Pen-F mono mode 2 ("Tri-X") is "unique" and impossible to reproduce is just false.

- If you shoot raw, you will have so much more flexibility later.

Don't know anything about the first but the latter is absolutely bang on.

Well, it shows that YOU can reproduce it - can you share the secrets of how you did it?

My inclination - and I'm a newcomer to the PenF so my view may change with more experience - is that my best approach is to shoot raw+jpeg. This has a number of advantages (for me):

1. I can instantly see - in Lightroom - the conversion (and the crop) that I chose at the time of shooting, while retaining the raw should I decide it would be useful later
2. I don't have to do any extra processing at all if I am happy with the jpg I got.

Even if I was shooting purely raw, I think I would still use the monochrome position on the dial if I wanted a mono shot, just because seeing the image in mono in the EVF makes it so much easier to visualize the final shot.

I'll dig out the settings and post them up. I can make an LR profile too that you can just copy - will save you moving all those sliders around!

So, here are the LR settings - it's a LR profile:

http://www.famillekaye.com/Pen-F Mono 2.lrtemplate

You'll need to right click and download it, then copy it to your Develop Presets folder. On Windows, it's here:

Re: Pen-F Mono mode - a little game!

Thanks for this - I downloaded it and had a quick play. Seems to be coming out quite a bit darker than the OOC Jpeg on the file I tried it on, not quite sure what is going on at the moment. But it certainly gives me a good starting point and some confidence that I could create a mono conversion from the raw that was as good (or better) than the in-camera version.
