WD gives consumers a cloud of their own

Storage solutions company, WD, today introduced its new My Cloudô family of personal cloud solutions. WD's My Cloud is a complete solution for users to organise, centralise and secure the digital content from all of their computers and mobile devices and access those files from any device, from anywhere in the world. By simply connecting a My Cloud personal cloud drive to the Internet, consumers get the anywhere, any-device access they can get from the public cloud, without having to pay monthly fees or giving up control of their personal data.

Re: WD gives consumers a cloud of their own

Sounds like a good idea if you have a fast connection, I would far rather use my own "cloud" than somebody else's. However with a standard 8Mb/s connection giving an upload speed of about 400Kb/s, it would take rather a long time to access even a few typical 12MB raw image files ...

Yes - this is the current weakness of the Cloud for many uses. I have a couple of terabytes of files on my Cloud service - LiveDrive, - it was relatively easy getting the files up there (we have an unlimited upload tariff here at the office) but downloading them could be expensive or very slow...

Re: WD gives consumers a cloud of their own

I have 50GB available on BT Cloud but I worked out that if I wanted to fill that up over a standard ADSL phone line, with the computer on 24/7 it would take approximately a fortnight .
